hannitanHello everyone, I am considering making my IKEA BESTÅ furniture a bit more flexible and wanted to know: Is it easy to equip IKEA BESTÅ furniture with additional casters?
I mean whether it is technically and practically straightforward to attach extra casters under the individual modules or base units of the BESTÅ system without compromising stability or functionality.
Are there special parts or tips to consider? What about the load capacity that the casters need to handle, and especially whether the furniture will remain stable and move smoothly?
I look forward to hearing experiences or advice that can help realistically assess this project and possibly carry it out with minimal effort.

In principle, it is possible to equip IKEA BESTÅ modules with casters, but there are a few important points to consider.
First, you need to check which type of caster you use – ideally, casters with brakes that have sufficient load capacity (at least 25 kg per caster, depending on the number of casters per piece of furniture).
Since BESTÅ units are not originally designed for casters, the attachment should be done securely. It is recommended to mount the casters on solid points under the base panel, often using appropriate screws and, if necessary, metal plates for reinforcement to prevent pressure marks.
Sometimes universal casters with suitable mounting plates can be helpful, which can be screwed on directly. It is also important to measure the height in advance so that after installing the casters, the overall height fits well with the room and furniture design.

Since the Bestå components are not originally designed for casters, the attachment should be done securely.Additionally: The BESTÅ modules have a relatively sturdy construction, but they are generally made of engineered wood materials that are not fully resistant to localized forces, such as those applied by casters.
The mounting options for casters are therefore limited. Distributing the load across multiple casters per module is important to prevent bending or sagging. Furthermore, the surface on which the casters roll should be smooth and even, otherwise they will not roll freely or the furniture piece could be damaged.
There are some retrofit kits and DIY guides that recommend attaching casters using metal brackets or plates screwed underneath the furniture to distribute the load optimally. However, caution is advised, as improper attachment can compromise stability.
I recommend checking the technical specifications of the casters and carefully selecting the mounting points on the furniture before making any modifications.

Is it easy to equip IKEA BESTÅ furniture with additional casters? An interesting point that I would like to explore further: What exactly do we mean by "easy" in this context?
From my perspective, it is not straightforward, as the standard BESTÅ units are not designed by IKEA for mobile use. The fit of the caster mounts needs to be precise, and some casters require appropriate drill holes in sturdy locations, which are not always accounted for in the panels that make up the furniture.
I would like to know if there are any caster models recommended by IKEA or the community that fit without major modifications, or if improvisation is inevitably required.
Additionally, the impact on warranty and the long-term integrity of the furniture should be considered. A simple screw might be sufficient or could even cause material damage.
My conclusion: Ease largely depends on the level of DIY skills available and whether one is willing to accept potential risks to the furniture’s structure.

To what extent do we define "easy" in this context? This is an important point. I would like to provide a complete assessment since I have personally installed casters on BESTÅ units.
- Attaching casters to IKEA BESTÅ furniture is generally possible, but not always straightforward on the first try. There is no official IKEA accessory set for casters.
- Casters with metal mounting plates, which can be attached to the bottom of the base panel, are recommended. Most base panels have good load-bearing capacity, but be cautious with very heavy loads.
- It is important to securely screw the casters into the designated support points to prevent them from pulling through the material. If in doubt, add a small reinforcement using metal brackets.
- It is essential to choose casters with brakes to ensure safety, especially on smooth flooring surfaces.
- Additionally, check before purchase how the furniture behaves when assembled, as some modules include back panels that affect stability when rolling.
Overall: It is definitely feasible, but some DIY skills and a solid plan are required. Anyone who plans to move the furniture frequently will clearly benefit from adding casters.
