ᐅ Is it acceptable to rebuild using damaged bricks?

I have a question about using damaged blocks. Here’s the situation: our exterior walls are currently being built, and quite a few damaged aerated concrete blocks (Porit plan blocks) are being used. The blocks have cracks, and in some cases, the corners are severely broken off.
The masons say these are just normal transport damages and it’s not a big issue because there is plenty of joint filler to compensate.
However, I am increasingly concerned. Is it really acceptable to use blocks like these, and what disadvantages might I face as a result? Can I report this as a defect and have the blocks returned?

Defective bricks must not be used in masonry, as the bonding pattern (the typical staggered joints) cannot be maintained, which could compromise the structural stability of the wall. The argument that "there is enough leveling mortar" is really misguided: Poroton plan bricks are highly insulating; the wall’s thermal performance is reduced if damaged areas of the bricks are simply repaired with mortar.

It is true that these are common transport damages, and the builder must account for this loss, but these bricks must not be used in construction.

When I hear that, it really gets on my nerves. Apparently, as a layperson, you have to question every decision made by the contractors, or else you’ll be taken advantage of. 😡 Your arguments sound completely convincing to me. I will immediately report the defect and demand the use of intact bricks.

Hello,

My father did the same on advice. The result was that nothing held up, and the energy costs increased significantly. Then large cracks appeared in the wall, creating a risk that the wall could collapse. Correcting the defect was quite extensive.

So, do not use such bricks.

I must be dreaming, what kind of professional makes a suggestion like that? Damaged bricks must never be used in masonry. What Regina is writing here would drive me crazy. It’s obvious that the wall won’t hold. I find this absolutely negligent.

I also had numerous bricks that were damaged during transport. My masons wanted to use them anyway, but I had serious concerns. In the end, I insisted, and only whole bricks were used in the masonry.
