ᐅ Is Additional Insulation Absolutely Necessary?

I have a single-family house built with the following masonry construction:

- 11.5 cm (4.5 inches) dense solid brick 1.8/250 + 2.0 cm (0.8 inches) expanded polystyrene insulation + 17.5 cm (6.9 inches) aerated concrete 1.4/150

What do you think? With this setup, is adding more insulation absolutely necessary or would it bring significant benefits? A heat pump is planned, but for that, the house needs to be “well” insulated. Unfortunately, it is never clearly defined what “well” insulated actually means. Is the construction described above considered “well” insulated or rather insufficient?

Also, what do the numbers 1.8/250 and 1.4/150 after the dense brick and aerated concrete indicate?

You can see that from the numbers. Stone provides very little insulation. That’s why good winter jackets use down or synthetic materials, which insulate well because they trap a lot of air.

Without external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS / external wall insulation), I don’t see a heat pump working for you. Gas or possibly pellets would be more suitable.

Wall structure: sand-lime brick, polystyrene, sand-lime brick, EPS 035, outside air.

But if I understand correctly, I only need to install 150 mm (6 inches) of EPS insulation, and that should provide more than adequate thermal protection, right? Would a heat pump then make more sense, especially with an existing underfloor heating system? Regardless of the heat pump, it would probably be sensible to insulate the façade here, wouldn’t it? Or should the priority be to insulate the roof and the basement ceiling first?

I have a detached house built in solid construction with the following masonry:
- 11.5 cm (4.5 inches) dense lightweight concrete block 1.8/250 + 2.0 cm (0.8 inches) polystyrene insulation + 17.5 cm (7 inches) sand-lime brick 1.4/150
From which building year was that considered the current trend in humor?

Yep, then everything looks quite different.

That depends on the design (pipe spacing) of the underfloor heating system.

Insulating the property is definitely not a bad idea, but just insulating alone isn’t the right approach. I recommend consulting an energy advisor, so you can also check if you qualify for any subsidies. It’s no use insulating the façade if heat escapes through the roof, windows, front door, or basement. Also, if the pipe spacing in the underfloor heating is too wide, you will still need hot rather than warm water flowing for it to heat properly.
