Hello everyone!
Some time ago, I bought a Kallax shelving unit from IKEA, and not all of the shelves have been installed yet. Now I’m considering adding the shelves later because my storage needs have changed. My question is: how difficult is it really to add shelves to an already assembled shelving unit?
I’ve read that you sometimes have to partially disassemble the unit or use special tools because some of the drill holes and dowels are partially hidden.
Does anyone have experience with this? How much effort is involved, and are there any tips or tricks to add the shelves more easily without taking the whole unit apart?
I’d appreciate any insight, especially if you can recommend tools or techniques to make the process easier. Thanks in advance!

warrenka5718 Nov 2024 08:52Fepuge, I completely understand how frustrating it can be when you want to make changes to a piece of furniture afterward and things don’t go as planned. I had the same experience with my Kallax – I assembled it fully first and then realized I needed more shelves.
My advice: Take your time and take breaks if it gets too tricky. And above all, if you’re unsure, it’s better to ask here in the forum before stopping halfway. Otherwise, you might just end up frustrated.
It also helps if someone can hold the shelf for you while you work on the drill holes. Doing it alone with just two hands is often almost impossible. Stay persistent! 🙂

A little adventure 🙂 I agree with that! 🙂 Installing shelf inserts afterward can sometimes be tricky, but with a bit of skill and patience, it usually works out well.
For my shelf, I simply unscrewed the top panel briefly, which gave me great access.
Another helpful tip: slightly dampen the small plastic shelf inserts, like those from IKEA, or rub them lightly with soap – this makes them easier to slide in.
And yes – a cordless drill is an essential tool! Wishing you good luck and fewer challenges than expected! ;-)
Installing shelves afterward is quite easy if you remove the side panel or the top board. Otherwise, the dowel holes are hard to reach. You don’t need any special tools, just a screwdriver or a cordless drill. Stability won’t be affected as long as you screw everything back together properly afterwards.
Wow, I love Kallax! 🙌 I also installed my shelves afterward and didn’t find it too difficult at all! Just unscrewed the top panel, had a second person helping, grabbed a cordless drill – and off we went!
The result is really practical, and the shelf feels like new afterward. If you need some motivation: You can definitely do it, the effort is really worth it! Good luck, and feel free to post updates, we’re looking forward to them 😉
