klofarHello everyone,
I am about to install an Ikea METOD kitchen unit in an older apartment and am unsure how to ensure the stability and safety of the kitchen. The walls are partly uneven, and some are even somewhat fragile. I wonder whether the standard fixings for the METOD units will be sufficient or if additional reinforcements are necessary.
Furthermore, I am concerned about how to best deal with the often uneven floors, which are common in older buildings. I definitely want to avoid the cabinets loosening or wobbling over time due to uneven loads or misalignment.
Does anyone have experience with securely installing METOD kitchen units specifically in older apartments? What tips or special materials have proven effective in making the construction safe and long-lasting? I look forward to your advice and suggestions.

I’ve installed several METOD kitchens myself, including in older apartments with similar challenges. It’s important to carefully check the walls—if they are crumbly, make sure to use the right anchors and screws in suitable places. If necessary, use heavy-duty anchors or even chemical anchors.
Regarding uneven floors: place the cabinets on adjustable feet, which you can buy from Ikea to fit the METOD series. This is a great way to compensate for irregularities and keep the cabinets stable.
I’d also recommend always securing the wall cabinets to the base cabinets and the wall. This provides very good stability.
Don’t stress, it can be done well! If you want, I’m happy to help with more details! 👍
Regarding the stability of Ikea METOD kitchen units in older buildings, there are several important points to consider:
- Walls in older buildings are often irregular and may not always be strong enough for standard fastenings. It is highly recommended to conduct a thorough examination of the wall condition before installation, possibly with the help of a building surveyor.
- For brittle or aged wall materials, heavy-duty anchors or chemical anchors should be used to securely mount the wall cabinets.
- Floor conditions are also critical: uneven floors must be compensated with height-adjustable furniture feet to create a level and stable base.
- During installation, it is important to connect the cabinets not only to the wall but also to each other. Ikea provides connecting screws and fittings that should definitely be used.
- Point loads from heavy appliances should be supported by additional reinforcements in the base units.
In summary: With proper preparation, appropriate fastening materials, and careful use of the connecting fittings, METOD kitchen units can be installed safely and securely in older buildings. A careful inspection of the local conditions is essential.

A thorough inspection of the local conditions is essential.Absolutely right! And to add a little humor: old building walls are like a cat’s personality – sometimes they purr steadily, the next moment you hear a creak and have to be careful. 😅
Jokes aside, what really helped me was a combination of:
- Adjustable feet for the base cabinets: These act like little helpers, turning even the most uneven surface into a stable foundation.
- High-quality heavy-duty anchors, which I specifically got for old building walls at the hardware store.
- And making sure to securely screw the cabinets together so nothing wobbles or pushes out.
One more tip: with tricky walls, it can be helpful to first attach a wooden batten or wall framing to the wall and then mount the METOD rails onto that. This allows you to even out irregularities and create a stable substructure.
Good luck with the assembly; the result will turn out really great! 😊
