Hello everyone, I am currently working on optimizing the lighting for my Ikea METOD tall cabinets and would like to gather your experiences and recommendations. Specifically, I am looking for solutions that not only provide even illumination but are also flexible and energy-efficient. I am particularly interested in the following aspects: - Which types of lighting (LED strips, spotlights, sensors) work best for tall cabinets? - How can I avoid shadows when the cabinet doors are opened? - Are there practical solutions that can be easily retrofitted without much effort? - How have you managed the lighting control (switches, motion detectors, remote controls)? I want to avoid making it too technical or complicated, but still have enough light in the right places. LED strips are best for METOD tall cabinets because they take up little space and provide even lighting. The easiest option is LED strips with motion sensors that automatically turn on when the door is opened. Shadows can be avoided by mounting them at the top edge of the cabinet. A simple retrofit option is self-adhesive LED strips, which can be easily customized.

I would like to contribute a bit more in detail on this topic, as I have installed lighting in several METOD tall cabinets at home and understand the question about the best lighting very well.

First, I would recommend using LED technology for the lighting system, as LEDs offer several advantages such as long service life, low heat generation, and good efficiency. This is especially important in tall cabinets where the space is limited and overheating should be avoided.

To prevent shadows, it is advisable to mount the light source at the top of the cabinet, ideally so that the light evenly illuminates the shelves. Many users install LED strips behind the door or on the inside of the cabinet side. However, this often creates shadows when the cabinet is open inward.

A highly recommended alternative is adjustable LED spotlights that can be individually directed. This allows you to optimize the light distribution perfectly.

Regarding control: motion sensors work well if you need to grab something quickly, but some people prefer a traditional switch to manually control the lighting. Smart controls, for example with remote control or apps, can also be helpful if you don’t mind the extra budget and installation effort.

For retrofitting, I can add that Ikea now sells LED lighting solutions specifically designed for METOD – these usually fit well and are easy to connect. If you already have cabinets without built-in lighting, you can use more flexible LED strips with a suitable 12 V power supply.

If the cabinet has glass or open fronts, daylight white or cool white light makes more sense, while warm white is better for closed fronts to avoid the cabinet looking too sterile when opened.

I would like to point out critically that Ikea LED solutions are often somewhat more expensive and limit flexibility. It is much more important to consider the color temperature and the actual lux level inside the cabinet. Only bright light ensures good visibility, especially in deep tall cabinets.

I agree with this, but when installing, you should consider the cabinet’s depth and how much glare the spots might cause. Spots with diffused light or reflectors are often better here than pure point light.

Additionally, I suggest considering integrating dimmable elements so the light intensity can be adjusted to the time of day or usage. Motion sensors are practical but can be annoying if they switch too quickly or don’t stay on long enough.

A technical note: For many retrofits, 12V LED technology is best suited because it is safe and expandable through easily replaceable power supplies. This offers more flexibility than fixed Ikea modules.
