Hello everyone, I am currently planning the construction of an Ikea METOD kitchen island, specifically using modules that provide ample storage space and a generous work surface. I have several questions about optimal assembly and stability, especially regarding how to best combine multiple base cabinets with drawers and pull-outs so that the island is both sturdy and level.

I am particularly interested in the steps to consider when the modules are not placed against a wall but stand freely in the middle of the room. Are there specific fasteners recommended to prevent slipping or wobbling in this setup? And what is the ideal way to attach the countertop on a freestanding island to avoid stress or deformation?

From a storage perspective, I also don’t want to compromise: which module types offer plenty of space without appearing too bulky in height?

I would be very grateful for valuable tips and personal experiences!

Hello Remi56, for freestanding METOD islands, it is essential to firmly connect the modules to each other using the original connectors. Use enough fasteners on the sides to ensure stability. The countertop is usually secured with screws from underneath the cabinets, but be careful about possible wood movement – allow some clearance. For plenty of storage space, tall drawers (e.g., 80cm (31.5 inches)) are ideal, as they can hold a lot of kitchen items.

For clarification: The Ikea METOD modules are primarily designed for wall mounting, so there are certain special considerations when used for freestanding islands.

Connections:
- For islands, it is recommended to fix the module frames to each other on adjoining sides using the included dowel and screw fasteners.
- Additionally, sturdy metal brackets can be used inside to connect the modules, which increases torsional rigidity.

Countertop:
- The countertop is often installed using the supplied mounting bracket, or alternatively, screws from underneath that secure the countertop. These screws should be fitted with washers or spacers to compensate for wood swelling.

Storage:
- The deep 60 cm (24 inches) cabinets with a maximum height of 80 cm (31.5 inches) offer the best storage capacity. For the work surface, a combination of drawers at the bottom and wide countertops with a depth of 120–126 cm (47–50 inches) is recommended; this also gives a visually stable appearance for freestanding units.

Important: Check for leveling feet under the modules as needed to compensate for uneven floors and minimize wobbling.

Hey Remi56, building a kitchen island using METOD sounds like a great project! 😎 For assembly, I’d also recommend reinforcing the joints between the modules with wood glue, as this can sometimes help prevent unwanted creaking or wobbling.

This is really important, especially with older floors. Nothing is more annoying than a kitchen island that wobbles while you’re working.

By the way, you can also attach the countertop with brackets if you want to remove it later, which is really handy for cleaning or future adjustments. Good luck with your build!

Here is a brief guide to systematically assist with assembling a METOD kitchen island with high storage and work surface capacity:

1. Preparation:
- Check that the floor is level and even, using a spirit level if necessary.
- Inspect all modules for damage.

2. Connecting modules:
- Connect side panels using dowels and screws.
- Attach metal brackets from the inside for reinforcement.
- Install module legs (including leveling feet) and adjust their height.

3. Worktop:
- If needed, prepare the worktop for fitting before placing it.
- Secure from underneath with screws and wooden battens, allowing for slight movement.
- Reinforce mounting material if heavy appliances are to be integrated.

4. Finishing touches:
- Attach toe kicks to perfect the finished appearance.
- Check and adjust drawer mechanisms.

Common mistakes:
- Insufficient connection between modules leads to instability.
- Fixing the worktop too rigidly, risking deformation.
- Incorrect adjustment of leveling feet results in rocking.

Once all steps are completed, nothing stands in the way of a stable island with plenty of storage and a large work surface.

Regarding storage space: If you need a lot of room, I recommend combinations of drawer modules and pull-out cabinets with internal pull-outs. The METOD system allows for standardized internal pull-outs, which significantly improve organization.

When installing an island, it is also important to consider the loads, for example from a large granite countertop: The countertop transfers forces to the cabinets, so the connections should be properly reinforced, and additional supports may be necessary.

For mounting the countertop on freestanding islands, a gap of about 5 mm (0.2 inches) between the countertop and cabinets is recommended to accommodate wood movement. The attachment should not be completely rigid but allow for slight movement with flexible connectors.
