Zocker_350922 Jul 2015 01:19Hello fellow IKEA fans,
I’m new here and joined for a very specific reason.
After about 12 years, my IKEA "Maximal" office chair finally broke. Over the years, the upholstery has worn down and started to come apart, and the internal components began crumbling. Today, something inside broke when I sat down with some force. Under the seat, a rounded metal “thing” with a hole has broken through the plastic and seemingly through another metal sheet.
Since this chair has long been discontinued, I now come to my main question:
Which chair is the closest substitute for the Maximal? My backside never wants another chair.
After a bit of searching, I found the also discontinued "Procent" chair, which looks very similar to the "Maximal."
Does anyone know if the only difference is the backrest? Could I buy a used Procent and attach the backrest from my old Maximal to it?
Because the backrest is the only part of the upper assembly still fully functional and undamaged.
And is there any way to extend the lifespan of used office chairs? Like oiling the mechanisms or something?
My Maximal has taken a lot of wear in recent years and squeaked loudly when sitting down, but I never got around (in more ways than one) to checking if you can oil these chairs to stop the squeaking. Maybe that would have slowed the aging process.
If anyone has ideas on where I might still find a used Maximal (preferably in good condition), please share a tip. I already found one on classified ads but I’m waiting for a reply and worry the 6-month-old listing might no longer be current.
One last question: Is there anywhere a complete IKEA product history available that states when a product was produced and discontinued?
Thank you in advance for reading and for your help!
Best regards,
Zocker_3509

IKEA-Experte22 Jul 2015 20:47Hello, I think the best advice is to try sitting at IKEA and let your butt decide.
Lubricating won’t help prevent plastic parts from breaking. To avoid this, handle your chair gently, reduce the applied weight if necessary, and limit the usage time, especially if the username suggests the activity.

Zocker_350922 Jul 2015 21:46Well, what really annoyed me over the past few years was the squeaking. I'm just a bit worried that the new one will squeak too if I buy a used one. ^^
I am exactly 2 meters (6 feet 7 inches) tall and that alone makes me not exactly light. 😀

IKEA-Experte22 Jul 2015 23:02At 2 meters (6.6 feet), the standard 80 kg (176 lbs) is somewhat low.
If something squeaks, the cause must be identified. Silicone spray can help, or placing a felt pad or similar underneath.
If the squeaking spot is not accessible, it is usually not possible to eliminate the noise.
