ᐅ IKEA Malm Dresser Wobbles – How Can I Stabilize It?

Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago, I bought an IKEA Malm dresser, and although I carefully assembled it, it wobbles quite a bit, especially when I open the drawers or touch the dresser. I checked that all the screws are tight, which they are. The wobbling seems to come more from the overall construction, possibly due to the missing back panel cut or insufficient floor grip.

My question: What practical methods or tools do you recommend to significantly improve the stability of an IKEA Malm dresser without affecting its appearance or damaging the furniture?

I’m looking forward to tips, experiences, or recommendations for suitable accessories that can reliably fix this issue.

Regarding the back panel: If it is only stapled on, you can reinforce it with small wood screws.

Exactly, that’s the point where IKEA often tries to cut costs – and we end up paying the price with wobbly furniture. Why don’t they include extra reinforcements as standard? But I guess the convenience of quick assembly is considered more important than stability...

I would recommend going beyond the standard dimensions and techniques, especially with the Malm. Some people use galvanized metal brackets, apply glue to the joints, or add cross braces. The standard setup is often not enough, especially if the dresser is subjected to heavier use. What do you think—has anyone here ever installed cross braces under a Malm?

Is there a trick to attaching brackets ideally without damaging the wall, in case you want to reposition them later?

I know how frustrating it can be when you don’t want to drill holes in the wall – I faced the same issue. From my experience, brackets fixed with longer screws and properly installed wall plugs provide the best stability. If it really can’t be avoided, you could also try double-sided tape designed for lightly loaded furniture, but that should only be used in emergencies and for parts with minimal weight.

Don’t worry if a dresser wobbles a bit at first. Usually, it settles over time as the wood adjusts, and tightening the screws again helps. However, if you want lasting security, screws are the best option.
