Hello everyone, I have an issue with the drawer handles on the IKEA Malm dressers. These plastic handles keep breaking, especially with frequent use and when pulled a bit forcefully. I’m interested to know if there are any proven methods or tricks to better secure or reinforce these handles to prevent premature breakage. It’s important for me to avoid replacing the handles completely if possible – maybe by gluing, reinforcing from the inside, or similar approaches. Does anyone have experience or ideas on this? Looking forward to your tips!

Superglue applied sparingly on the inside of the handles usually works very well; just apply a small amount and let it cure. Metal reinforcements are often too complex and alter the appearance. If screws are not properly seated, handles tend to break more quickly, so always check them carefully.

For your information: IKEA sells replacement handles made of metal that fit Malm. These are much more durable and less likely to break.

Do you know if I can also get epoxy resin in small quantities at a hardware store?

Yes, you can usually find it at hardware stores in small tubes or kits. Use a two-component epoxy adhesive with medium viscosity for easier handling.

Can metal sheets be cut to size easily?

You can use tin snips, or many hardware stores offer cutting services for small metal pieces. However, to achieve a precise fit, some filing and adjustment are usually necessary. If you have no experience, I recommend using the bonding method with epoxy resin instead.

Summary:
- Small epoxy kits are practical and effective
- Metal sheets are possible but more labor-intensive
- Avoid over-tightening screws

Good luck!

This is great, getting so many tips here! 🙂 I would also switch to metal handles – they last much longer and often look even nicer. I converted two Malm dressers myself, and since then I’ve had no problems. So if you want peace of mind for the long term, that’s my recommendation!
