Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Malm bed that unfortunately still squeaks despite a professional repair. The workshop checked the screws and tightened the connecting fittings, but the noise is still noticeable when lying down or moving.

I’m interested in what other causes there might be if all obvious repair steps have already been done. Are there maybe weak points or typical parts that are often overlooked?

The bed is about 3 years old and has been used normally and regularly, with no overloading or anything like that. I’m not very skilled technically, but I would appreciate any tips from someone with experience on what else to check to finally stop the squeaking.

Thanks in advance!

If there is dust or small particles, that can also cause the squeaking.

Exactly! Additionally, I recommend being gentle when cleaning to avoid damaging the surfaces. It’s best to use a dry cloth and avoid harsh cleaning agents.

When applying a suitable lubricant, it’s better to test it first on an inconspicuous area. Some oils can damage wood over time or cause stains.

Make sure to also check the support points of the slatted frame. If the supports shift when moved, it can cause quite loud squeaking.

A structured approach helps a lot here, kenplo. I recommend the following steps:

1. Check screws: Tighten all screws, not just the visible ones, using the appropriate tools.
2. Clean contact surfaces: Remove dust and debris, especially on wood-to-wood joints.
3. Apply lubricant: Use a dry lubricant such as graphite powder or a special silicone spray.
4. Inspect the slatted frame: Check the slatted bed base for movement and support points.
5. Check the floor: Make sure the bed stands stable and does not wobble.
6. Test: After each step, check the bed for any noises.

Common mistakes often include only tightening screws on the frame and forgetting the slatted base supports. Also, overtightening can increase squeaking by adding stress.

Good luck!

That's right, that's how you should proceed.

Thank you all for the helpful responses!

I will now proceed directly with the checklist suggested by bulanau and take a closer look at the slat supports and contact surfaces.

I hadn’t considered the floor condition either. The bed is standing on a carpet, which could indeed cause pressure differences.

I’ll get back to you as soon as I know more!
