Hello everyone,
I recently bought an Ikea Besta shelving unit and want to store some electronic devices safely in it. Specifically, this includes devices like AV receivers, gaming consoles, Wi-Fi routers, and external hard drives. The challenge is to ensure good airflow while also protecting the devices from dust and vibrations.
Does anyone have experience storing electronics in the Ikea Besta? What measures are effective to prevent overheating and other damage? Are there any recommended accessories or tips to keep dust out without restricting airflow?
Iâm looking forward to your advice and suggestions!

Hey belene and everyone!
I really like this discussion here! đ
I actually equipped my media cabinet with small LED fans (I simply hid them behind the shelf using a USB connection). This ensures constant air circulation, which is especially beneficial for receivers!
Also, a small recommendation from me:
- Invest in cable clips and Velcro straps for the cables; it keeps everything much neater and prevents devices from overheating due to tangled cables.
- I keep dust away by using open shelving doors, and I also regularly run an air purifier in the roomâmaybe a bit elaborate, but excellent for keeping the device in good shape.
Sometimes itâs not that complicated, just a combination of small tricks!
I wish you lots of success, it will definitely work!

Additionally, I would like to provide an objective note regarding vibrations and shaking:
Many electronic devices, especially NAS units or external hard drives, benefit from shock-absorbing support. Specifically, this means:
- Using rubber or silicone feet (placed under the device or adhesive)
- Avoiding direct contact with wooden surfaces, as the transmission of vibrations increases mechanical stress on the devices
Furthermore, when using Ikea Besta cabinets, you might consider placing small rubber mats inside to help reduce even slight vibrations.
This protects the sensitive hard drive components and extends their lifespan. Air circulation must not be restricted, so please ensure a supportive but well-ventilated setup.
