Hello everyone,

I recently bought an IKEA Besta shelving unit and would like to add a glass top to give the furniture a more elegant and durable appearance. My question is about the best way to securely and stably mount a glass panel on the Besta without it slipping or getting damaged.

I am especially interested in practical advice on mounting methods, suitable materials for supports, and possible protective measures to prevent scratches or other damage to both the wood and glass.

Has anyone had experience with this? How did you fix the glass panel, and what dimensions and glass thickness did you choose?

I look forward to your suggestions and solutions!

Hey, I really like the idea of using a glass panel! 🙂 I decorated my Besta the same way and can share a few tips:

- It’s best to use tempered glass (safety glass) around 6 to 8 mm (1/4 to 5/16 inch) thick — it’s sturdy and more resistant to breakage than regular glass.
- To keep the glass panel from slipping, I stuck small transparent rubber bumpers under the corners. They also cushion and prevent scratches on the wood.
- Alternatively, you can use small silicone pads or thin foam strips around the edges as spacers.
- If you want to secure the panel firmly, there are special clips you can attach to the edges of the Besta, which hold the glass safely.

Just give it a try — it’s quick to do and looks very stylish!

Thank you, that sounds practical! Would you simply stick the rubber bumpers directly onto the wood, or do you use a clever separating layer between the wood and rubber? My concern is that the adhesive might leave marks if I ever remove the glass panel later.

Also, did you choose a minimum glass size slightly larger than the Besta surface so the panel overhangs a bit, or is it exactly the same dimensions?

It’s also important for me to know whether the glass just rests on top or if it should be secured in some way, especially when there are small children in the house who might shake the furniture.

Hello pietsu,

I’m happy to help you with a structured approach for installing a glass top on the IKEA Besta:

- Glass type & size: As mentioned before, toughened safety glass (tempered glass) is highly recommended for safety reasons. Choose a glass panel that is about 1 to 2 cm (0.4 to 0.8 inches) larger in length and width than the Besta surface, creating a slight overhang for a visually pleasing finish.

- Protection & spacers: Use small self-adhesive rubber pads (around 3-5 mm (0.1 to 0.2 inches) thick) at all four corners and possibly additional spots on the support surface. These provide stability, prevent slipping, and protect the wood surface.

- Mounting without adhesive: Ideally, place the glass panel on top without fully gluing it down. This way, you can remove it any time and avoid permanent adhesive marks.

- Fixing options: If you want to secure the glass for extra safety, use half-round silicone clamps (plastic clips) on the back or front side of the unit, where the glass can be gripped. These are easy to install and can be removed without leaving any residue.

- Safety & stability: Make sure the glass doesn’t overhang excessively—a 1 cm (0.4 inches) edge is usually enough. If there are children in the household, a light fixation might be advisable.

I hope this helps with your project!

I would like to offer a somewhat more critical perspective here. The idea of placing a glass top on an IKEA Besta is certainly appealing, but caution is especially important when it comes to glass:

- Load-bearing: The Besta is a modular piece made of particleboard. These surfaces can warp slightly or be uneven under point loads. A glass top requires as flat a support surface as possible to avoid stress – otherwise, it can easily crack.

- Adhesive vs. loose placement: It sounds practical to just lay the glass on top, but this carries risks if sudden movements or lateral pressure occur. On the other hand, permanent adhesive can damage the surface, as has already been mentioned.

- Alternative solutions: Instead of a full glass top, a custom-made plexiglass or acrylic sheet might be a better option. These are lighter, more impact-resistant, and less prone to breakage, although they can be more susceptible to scratches.

- Technical question: Who takes responsibility in case of glass breakage? How are the edges protected? Especially with children around, safety glass should be insisted upon, and makeshift fixings should be avoided.

My appeal: Please carefully consider whether to choose glass or a visually similar but more durable alternative. And if glass is used, ensure professional installation throughout!

That’s a very good point, thanks! I’m considering using toughened glass precisely because of these tensions and the possible warping of the wooden panel.

In the short term, I also see plexiglass as an option, but I prefer the look of real glass—especially the transparency and reflections, which appear more elegant.

What are your experiences with mounting the glass top, taking into account material stresses and avoiding adhesive? Do you tend to secure it firmly or just let it rest loosely?

By the way, I was thinking of glass with a thickness of 6 mm (1/4 inch)—what do you think? And how exactly do your clips prevent the panel from slipping without applying too much pressure?
