Hello everyone, I am currently considering how to convert the Ikea Hemnes bed frame into a DIY daybed with storage. Specifically, I envision the sleeping surface more as a bench with storage space, so that it can be used comfortably for sitting during the day and as a sleeping option at night. I am particularly interested in the following points: How should the slatted bed base (bed frame slats) and mattress be modified or replaced? How can the seating surface be made stable and comfortable without losing the storage space? Are there any tips for visual modifications, such as using cushions, padding, or paint? Has anyone completed a similar project or can recommend good instructions? Thanks for your experiences and ideas!

How should the slatted frame and mattress be handled or replaced? This is a key point. If you want to convert the HEMNES bed into a sofa bed, I would first recommend completely removing the original slatted frame. It is mainly designed for lying comfort, not for seating stability. For this purpose, I usually build a sturdy wooden board made of plywood or MDF, cut precisely to fit the internal dimensions of the bed frame. This board then supports seat cushions or padding and prevents sagging.

How can you ensure that the seating surface is stable and comfortable without losing the storage space? It is important that the wooden board does not rest directly on the floor. Instead, you can attach small, sturdy feet or spacers so that the existing storage space (drawers or bed box) remains accessible. These feet must be strong enough to support the weight when sitting. Also, you should securely fix the board on the sides with brackets or screws to prevent any wobbling.

Are there any tips for visual changes, such as with cushions, padding, or paint? For the appearance, it’s good to either paint the board to match the white HEMNES look with white paint or cover it with durable fabric. Padded or thick seat cushions can be fastened with hook-and-loop tape (Velcro). For the backrest, you have two options: either keep the original backrest if you still have it or build a separate backrest (e.g., from a wooden frame and foam) which you can then attach.
By the way: Please let me know if you plan to use the original parts or build everything new. That way I can give you more specific technical advice.
Super exciting topic! I converted my own HEMNES into a DIY sofa and I’m really happy with it! 😊
I removed the slatted frame and replaced it with a sturdy plywood board cut to size. On top of that, I placed thick foam cushions covered with fabric to make it really cozy. Despite the board, I was still able to use the drawers without any problems by adding small wooden blocks as spacers. This keeps everything fully functional.
For painting, I chose clear varnish so you can still see the wood grain – it gives the whole thing a much more refined and personalized look. A little tip: I dressed up the bed’s backrest with a few decorative pillows to create the perfect lounge vibe.
My advice: start by taking precise measurements and think about how much padding you want. Then the whole process becomes a lot more enjoyable! If you like, I’m happy to share some useful tips.

Hello antefo! I would like to add some details from my experience to the already very good tips from TEBILO and noge58.
First, it is important to consider the structural stability of the bed frame. HEMNES beds are primarily designed for lying down, not for the point load when sitting on the bench. Therefore, reinforcement with a continuous wooden panel is almost always necessary. Make sure to secure the panel at least at 4 points with cross braces or brackets to prevent warping.
A high-quality, well-padded foam cushion is essential for comfort. Nothing is more uncomfortable than a hard sitting surface on a daybed, especially if you also want to use it as seating furniture. If you cover the cushions with removable covers, you can maintain hygiene more easily.
Visually, besides painting or upholstering, attaching wooden strips or edge profiles is also advisable to neatly cover the edges of the wooden panel. This increases durability and looks more professional.
Regarding storage space: depending on which HEMNES model you have, the drawers are quite sturdy. It is important that your additional construction does not obstruct the drawer operation—measure twice and test before final screwing.
If you want, I can also provide you with an example material list and dimensions—just get in touch!
