Hello everyone,
I am currently planning a larger project involving several BILLY shelves from IKEA and would like to know: How long does it usually take to assemble a BILLY shelf on average?
I am especially interested in how much time one should realistically allocate for a single shelf if you are somewhat handy but not a professional.
Are there any experiences or insights available, possibly even differences depending on whether you work alone or with two people?
I look forward to your assessments and any tips that help realistically estimate the time needed.

Experienced individual about 45 to 60 minutesI can only agree with that.
I built a slightly larger version, and my first Billy shelf really took close to an hour. The second version in the family went much faster. Routine just makes many things easier.
I have often noticed that the assembly time varies depending on the type of shelf (e.g., width or height):
A standard BILLY shelf with a width of 80 cm (31.5 inches) is quicker to assemble than versions with doors or larger dimensions. Hanging doors or adding additional inserts increases the time by about 20-30 minutes.
For shelves without doors, the assembly time is typically between 40 and 60 minutes.

I’m also curious: Are there common issues with the BILLY shelves that often cause delays during assembly? For example, difficult-to-handle parts or unclear steps in the instructions?
Or is the instruction manual usually clear enough that the actual assembly time is the main factor?
It would also be interesting to know if you use any tools that IKEA doesn’t specifically recommend but that make the assembly faster or easier.

Are there common issues with the BILLY shelves that cause delays during assembly?Yes, sometimes there are delays when fitting the back panel, which is quite thin and fragile.
The screws for the shelves are also small and require precision; otherwise, the structure can become unstable quickly.
A cordless drill with adjustable torque can be helpful to prevent over-tightening.
I always use a small cordless screwdriver, and that really makes a big difference. For the back panel, I sometimes use a utility knife to remove the film, which saves time 🙂
Sometimes a screw goes in at an angle; patience helps, and occasionally a small typo in the instructions can bring a smile. But for the most part, the instructions are clear and easy to understand.
