Hello everyone,

I am currently planning a larger project involving several BILLY shelves from IKEA and would like to know: How long does it usually take to assemble a BILLY shelf on average?

I am especially interested in how much time one should realistically allocate for a single shelf if you are somewhat handy but not a professional.

Are there any experiences or insights available, possibly even differences depending on whether you work alone or with two people?

I look forward to your assessments and any tips that help realistically estimate the time needed.

The assembly time for a BILLY shelf generally varies depending on experience and the number of helpers.

On average, an experienced individual needs about 45 to 60 minutes to assemble a simple BILLY shelf in standard size (approximately 80 x 28 x 202 cm (31.5 x 11 x 79.5 inches)).

With two people, this time can often be reduced to around 30 to 40 minutes, as holding individual parts while screwing is easier.

A well-organized workspace and sorting the parts and screws beforehand are also important to avoid delays.

I would also agree with RENMA but add a bit of a lighthearted note:

For me personally, assembling it with two people usually takes about 35 minutes if everything goes smoothly :-) Sometimes it takes 45 minutes if the instructions are a bit tricky and you have to turn something twice before it fits.

Doing it alone can take longer, but hey, it’s a great opportunity to listen to podcasts, and somehow the time still passes quickly 😉

60 minutes alone, 35 minutes with two people. Avoid selecting the wrong parts beforehand.

It is important not to underestimate the assembly.

Even though the BILLY shelf is considered simple, several factors come into play:

- Understanding the order of the work steps
- Proper use of tools
- Minor adjustments if walls are not perfectly straight

I recommend allocating about 1 to 1.5 hours, especially if you have little experience with this kind of task.

On the topic of average assembly time:

Many people underestimate the importance of sorting the screws beforehand. Especially with the BILLY shelf, the number of screws is manageable, but if you search randomly for screws, everything takes unnecessarily longer.

From my experience: An experienced DIYer can assemble a single BILLY shelf in 40 to 60 minutes. A complete beginner will likely need about 1.5 hours.

The ‘working alone or in pairs’ factor is also important.

If one person reads the instructions and identifies where to fasten screws on the shelf, the process goes faster.
