Hello everyone,

I am currently planning a larger project involving several BILLY shelves from IKEA and would like to know: How long does it usually take to assemble a BILLY shelf on average?

I am especially interested in how much time one should realistically allocate for a single shelf if you are somewhat handy but not a professional.

Are there any experiences or insights available, possibly even differences depending on whether you work alone or with two people?

I look forward to your assessments and any tips that help realistically estimate the time needed.

Delays in installing the back panel

That’s true. Nailing or screwing the back panel is often the tricky part.

Tip: Press the back panel gently into place first, then tighten it slowly. Applying too much force can warp it.

Also recommended: have a second person assist with this step—just to provide stability and hold the panel steady at the same time.

I have found that it is best to read the entire manual first and tick off each step by hand.

Many people start right away and then realize that this approach makes it harder to fit the parts together.

The time saved by thorough preparation is greater than that gained by faster screwing.

An additional tip: If you want to attach the shelves to the wall, you should plan an extra 10-20 minutes for this.

This is often overlooked but is important for safety, especially with larger BILLY shelves.

Exactly. Don’t underestimate the time needed for wall mounting.

For increased stability, make sure to secure the wall attachments. It doesn’t take long but ensures safety.
