Hello everyone.

Yesterday afternoon, we had a conversation with our window installer, who was commissioned by the general contractor.

It concerns a gallery window with a rough opening size of 201cm (79 inches) width and 213.5cm (84 inches) height.

The window is fixed glazing.

He claims that he cannot supply the window as a single piece, but only in two parts.

He justified this by referring to a standard, stating that a window can only be deflected by 8mm (0.3 inches) if wind pressure is applied, and so on.

Is this all correct? Or does he simply not want to install such a large (and possibly heavy) window?

It basically comes down to not letting the company brush you off with a simple statement just because they have to manage a more complicated installation...
You are absolutely right, a single-piece window looks better. If you are building with an architect and contracting the trades according to your specifications, this should not be a problem.

If you order from a full-service provider, you will only get what they have in their catalog or want to install—regardless of what else is available, what might be cheaper, or any other options. The full-service provider has factored in their warranty risk based on their experience with their suppliers and the products and services they offer. They will probably be reluctant to change that. In this case, you are not being brushed off, but you have a request outside of their product range.

It is, so to speak, the difference between a tailored suit and ready-to-wear clothing.

Well, the company gladly accepted the additional charge of €2000 for a front door with double-sided cladding or the €2100 for 4 external venetian blinds... So I think they can put a bit more effort into a “simple” window as well...

I’ve asked my site manager to look into this matter.

Our largest single-piece fixed-pane window measures 3.52 x 2.53 m (11.5 x 8.3 ft). It is located on the side facing away from the street, towards the slope, and the glass alone weighs over 400 kg (880 lbs). We will take out a very comprehensive glass insurance, as this massive pane can only be installed using a mobile crane from the street, which is 30 m (98 ft) away.

You can see that several factors influence window planning, including the altitude of your house above sea level. This somehow relates to the filling between the glass panes, according to our window manufacturer.

These are all aspects that can usually be addressed with an additional charge, in my opinion.

We have two bay windows, each measuring 1.88 m x 2.33 m (6.2 ft x 7.6 ft) installed, standard uPVC windows. So far, they have withstood all storms without any issues.

Our window is 3 meters (10 feet) high. Stairwell. It has an aluminum frame and safety glass.

Narrow interior space with large vertical window; view of white neighboring house with grey pitched roof.

Everything works fine, the crane also has to show up, and the thickness needs to be right. The additional cost was also reasonable.
