Hello everyone, I recently purchased some furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series, which is mostly made of lacquered solid wood. Now I am facing the challenge of cleaning these pieces properly without damaging the surface or affecting the lacquer finish in the long term. I am especially interested in which cleaning agents or home remedies are best suited for this purpose, and how to proceed when, for example, dust, greasy fingerprints, or minor stains appear on the surfaces. Are there specific techniques for wiping, particular cloths or materials that should be used or avoided? Tips on regular maintenance versus occasional deep cleaning are also welcome. The goal is to keep the Hemnes furniture looking well cared for as long as possible, without the surface becoming hardened, dull, or damaged. I look forward to your experiences and advice!
For cleaning IKEA HEMNES furniture, which is typically finished with a matte acrylic lacquer, there are clear and proven methods to prevent surface damage. First, never use aggressive or abrasive cleaning agents, as these can harm the lacquer. The following is recommended:
- Regularly remove dry dust with a soft, lint-free cloth, ideally microfiber.
- For light dirt, lukewarm water with a mild dish soap works well. The cloth should be well wrung out to avoid moisture on the surface.
- Grease stains can be treated with diluted vinegar water or a wood care product suitable for this purpose, but be cautious with vinegar as high concentrations can damage the lacquer.
- For stubborn stains, a special water-based furniture cleaner approved for lacquered surfaces is advisable.
- After cleaning, always wipe the surface dry with a cloth to prevent water spots and swelling.
- Silicone-based sprays or polishes are not suitable, as they can alter the surface and cause long-term dulling.
In general, less is more: gentle cleaning and no puddles of moisture are the best protection for HEMNES furniture.

I usually mix about 1 part vinegar to 10 parts water and use it to gently wipe small grease spots. It actually feels safer than using harsher chemical cleaners.
What I have noticed, however, is that you really need to be gentle and only use slightly damp cloths. Once, I wiped too hard, and afterward the surface appeared somewhat dull. Since then, I have been more careful and prefer to wipe again with a dry cloth more often.
It would be interesting to know if anyone here can recommend specific microfiber cloths that are truly gentle. I get the impression there are big differences, and it’s easy to choose one that leaves microscopic scratches.

It would be interesting to know if anyone here has recommendations for specific microfiber cloths that are truly gentle.I’m happy to help here: For caring for painted solid wood furniture like the HEMNES series, I recommend microfiber cloths with especially soft fibers that are explicitly labeled as "furniture-friendly" or "for delicate surfaces." Cotton cloths or rough rags should be avoided, as they can potentially roughen the surface.
Recommended procedure:
- Regularly remove dust using a dry microfiber cloth to prevent scratches caused by dirt particles.
- For damp cleaning, slightly moisten a microfiber cloth with a mild cleaning agent (pH-neutral, no ammonia or alcohol additives).
- Never leave surfaces wet—wipe dry promptly.
- If the furniture requires more intensive care, a special wood care cream for painted surfaces can be used (please avoid oil or wax, as these can damage the paint layer).
Additionally, I avoid direct sunlight and strong heat near the furniture, as this can cause the paint layer to fade or crack over time. Regular, gentle cleaning and care help preserve the texture and appearance for a long time.
