Hello everyone,

I am currently considering purchasing some furniture from the Brimnes series by Ikea, mainly dressers and beds. Since I value durability and load-bearing capacity in everyday use, I am especially interested in how well Ikea BRIMNES furniture holds up under regular use.

In particular, I want to know if the pieces can withstand frequent opening and closing of drawers, if the construction is sturdy enough to support somewhat heavier loads, and how the materials perform over longer periods—especially in households with children or multiple people.

I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences, including any specific notes on individual pieces or combinations from the series. I am also interested in any potential weak points or issues to watch out for before buying.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

That is a very good and nuanced question. The durability of BRIMNES furniture depends largely on the specific piece and especially its usage. In general, the BRIMNES series is considered an entry- to mid-level product, focusing more on good design and practicality rather than heavy-duty durability like some solid wood furniture.

For example, the dressers with drawers are constructed to be sufficiently stable for everyday use, as long as you stay within the recommended load limits (usually up to around 10-15 kg (22-33 lbs) per drawer). The metal drawer runners are usually reliable; however, after several years of heavy use, you may notice slight flexing or some squeaking.

Regarding the beds, their load capacity is well suited for average adults, but it is important to follow the assembly instructions carefully, since stability depends heavily on proper installation of all support elements. The materials used, such as particleboard with melamine coating, are visually appealing and easy to maintain but are not as resistant to high moisture exposure or strong mechanical impacts as solid wood.

It is also important to regularly check the screw connections: especially in households with children, where furniture is frequently moved or subjected to strain, these can loosen over time.

Could you provide a bit more information about how the furniture will be used? For example, how many people live in the household, and whether the furniture will be heavily loaded — for instance with heavy books, clothing, or other heavy items?

That way, I can offer more specific advice.

I have been using the BRIMNES dresser in my bedroom for several years now and can confirm that the furniture is quite suitable for regular daily use. The drawers still work perfectly and easily hold large amounts of clothing.

It might also be helpful to know that the furniture is made from particleboard and medium-density fiberboard (MDF). While these materials aren’t as durable as solid wood, they offer a good balance between cost, stability, and ease of maintenance. The surfaces are fairly resistant to scratches and easy to clean.

From my personal experience, I would say the durability and load-bearing capacity are sufficient as long as you don’t regularly store or sit on very heavy items that the furniture is not designed to support.

The assembly instructions do require some patience, but the stability of the finished pieces is definitely appropriate for the price range.

Are there any specific items in this series you’re interested in knowing more about regarding their durability?

I know that all too well—my BRIMNES dresser started to squeak a bit after about three years, but hey, you really can’t complain at that price! 😄

I think IKEA’s BRIMNES offers a great package for people who want functional and attractive furniture without looking for a $2000 wood cabinet. Sure, it’s not premium wood, but the furniture holds up surprisingly well against kids, cats, and the occasional climbing adventures.

So, in short: if you want something sturdy but not overly heavy, with good appearance and easy maintenance, BRIMNES is a solid choice. Maybe not ideal for extreme heavy-duty use or furniture quality purists, but better than many expect!

What’s your home like? More quiet with little wear and tear, or a lively environment?

Regarding the load capacity of BRIMNES furniture, several manufacturer specifications are available, which generally include the following points:

- Maximum load per drawer: about 12 kg (26 lbs)
- Total load capacity of the dresser: usually no more than 50 kg (110 lbs), depending on the number of drawers and assembly
- Bed frames are designed to support up to approximately 150 kg (330 lbs), depending on size and slatted base

The furniture is made from engineered wood materials (particleboard, MDF) with a melamine resin coating. This combination offers good surface hardness but limits the load capacity, especially with point loads. The fasteners and drawer slides are made of metal, though they are relatively basic and not intended for heavy industrial use.

The furniture is intended for daily use; however, for heavy-duty conditions—such as very heavy loading, frequent moving, or multiple users applying simultaneous stress—more robust furniture made from solid wood or metal is recommended.

If there are specific weaknesses to watch out for, these include:

- Screw connections that may loosen over time
- Potential softening under high humidity
- Metal slides with intensive use

Overall, BRIMNES furniture is stable enough for normal use but is only moderately recommended for heavily loaded environments.
