Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to install an Ikea Pax wardrobe system on a concrete wall in my apartment. I am wondering how to do this as safely and permanently as possible, without damaging the wall, while still ensuring the necessary stability. Are there any special anchors or fastening techniques that are particularly recommended for concrete walls, especially if the wardrobe will be fairly heavily loaded? I am also interested to know if there are differences in installation methods depending on the type of concrete or wall thickness.

I look forward to your practical advice and tips that are easy to understand for non-professionals. Thank you in advance!

Hello zark36,

for securely fixing Ikea PAX furniture to concrete walls, using appropriate heavy-duty anchors is essential. Metal expansion anchors or chemical anchors are the best options here. Metal expansion anchors are easy to install but, depending on the load, may offer less security than chemical anchors, which are fixed with a special resin and can support higher loads.

Please keep the following points in mind:

- Drill the hole with a drill bit matching the anchor size and clean out the drill dust.
- For concrete, use a hammer drill or rotary hammer to create a clean and precise hole.
- Chemical anchors provide better holding power in porous or cracked concrete.
- Make sure to utilize the PAX furniture’s mounting points properly and space the anchors according to the load.

Regarding different types of concrete: For very smooth, unreinforced concrete, a standard metal anchor is usually sufficient, but for porous or older concrete, it’s better to use chemical anchors. Wall thickness is important because the anchor must have sufficient embedment depth to hold securely.

In general, always prioritize quality and do not reduce the number of mounting points prescribed by the PAX furniture system manufacturer.

I hope this helps you.

To be honest, I often find chemical anchors overrated – yes, they hold well, but they are also more expensive and more complicated to install. For a PAX system on a solid concrete wall, well-approved heavy-duty expansion anchors are usually more than sufficient in my opinion.

Also: how many people really fill their cabinets to full capacity? Choosing such a complex fixing method is actually a bit over the top when most can manage with two or three solid anchors. It’s better to focus on good load distribution rather than the most expensive anchor.

And speaking of wall types: not all concrete is the same – in solid concrete anchors work well, but with hollow blocks or highly porous materials, no anchor truly performs reliably. In those cases, it’s better to reinforce with a metal plate behind or opt for freestanding solutions.

So, I believe practicality, proper distribution, and avoiding overcomplicated techniques work just fine.

I consider this statement quite risky. Especially with Ikea PAX systems, it pays off not to take the fixing lightly. These wardrobes are large, often have sliding doors attached on the outside, or many compartments that increase the weight. In case of doubt, it is a matter of safety for everyone in the room.

My advice: If you want to be on the safe side, use high-quality heavy-duty anchors (preferably metal) and distribute the fixing points as widely as possible. If the wall is porous, I actually recommend chemical anchors, as they anchor the load much better in concrete.

Also:
- Always clean the drill hole thoroughly, otherwise the anchor will hold less securely
- If in doubt, install several anchors to distribute the load
- Before installation, carefully check the assembly instructions including screws from Ikea

This investment is worth it to avoid damage to the wall or furniture. Safety should be prioritized, especially with heavy furniture on concrete walls.
