Good morning everyone,

I have a question regarding the replacement of hinges on IKEA Malm dressers. Specifically, I am interested in the best way to proceed when the existing hinges are defective or loose and need to be replaced. Are there any special considerations for this furniture series? How exactly is the hinge removed and reattached to both the dresser and the door, and is any special tool required? I have already tried to detach the doors but am unsure if I might cause any damage in the process.

I would appreciate a detailed guide or practical tips to ensure the replacement goes smoothly. Thank you in advance!

As an addition: When screwing in the new hinges, always apply gentle pressure to prevent the screws from stripping. If the holes are worn out, you can use wood shavings mixed with wood glue as filler before re-screwing.

A common mistake is tearing off the door by force

That is correct; mechanical stress should definitely be avoided on these sensitive connection points.

Additionally, I recommend marking the position of the doors before removing the hinges to make later adjustments easier.

The Malm series uses standardized hinges with a 26 mm (1 inch) drill hole on the door panel – this simplifies replacement.

Spare parts are available through the official IKEA service, ensuring proper fit, as alternative hinges are usually not compatible.

If the threads of the mounting screws are damaged, suitable plastic anchors or wood repair kits can generally be used to provide a secure screw connection.

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to quickly share that I recently replaced the hinges on my Malm chest of drawers – it was a lot of fun! 🙂

The key is to take your time and follow the steps carefully. Once you have separated the door from the hinge, you can almost put the hinges back together like building blocks!

If something doesn’t fit right, don’t worry. Often, a careful second look at how everything locks into place helps a lot – you’ll get it! Good luck to everyone planning to do this! :-)

About the tools: For the hinges, you basically only need a Phillips screwdriver size PH2. A cordless drill with low torque is recommended to avoid overtightening.

It might be worth lubricating the hinges with some silicone oil if they are stiff.
