Good morning everyone,

I have a question regarding the replacement of hinges on IKEA Malm dressers. Specifically, I am interested in the best way to proceed when the existing hinges are defective or loose and need to be replaced. Are there any special considerations for this furniture series? How exactly is the hinge removed and reattached to both the dresser and the door, and is any special tool required? I have already tried to detach the doors but am unsure if I might cause any damage in the process.

I would appreciate a detailed guide or practical tips to ensure the replacement goes smoothly. Thank you in advance!

Hello keflo,

To replace the hinges on a Malm chest of drawers, I recommend the following steps:

1. Remove the drawers and any interior fittings to get clear access to the hinges.
2. Carefully open the door and use a narrow screwdriver to pry off the cover cap on the hinge.
3. Then, you can remove the screws that attach the hinge to the chest.
4. The hinges are usually attached to the door side with a simple click mechanism and can be gently pulled off.
5. A Phillips screwdriver is generally sufficient; be careful not to use excessive force to avoid stripping the screws.

A common mistake is to forcefully pull off the door – this can damage the door structure or painted surfaces.

In summary: be patient when removing the cover cap, loosening the screws, and pulling out the hinge. Install the new hinge in the reverse order — then it should close properly again.

If you have any questions or need more details, just let me know!

Thanks for the detailed instructions. I took a closer look at the hinges today and noticed that my Malm dresser uses a kind of quick-release system for the hinges. Can you confirm if the hinges can actually be detached with this system, or is there something else that needs to be undone before removing them? Will the door frame where the hinge clips in be damaged in the process?

Also, are there specific replacement parts available from IKEA, or can universal hinges be used? The original mounting on mine is slightly damaged, so I’m unsure if it will still hold properly.

Yes, that’s exactly how it works with the Malm series: the hinges are usually mounted on a cam mechanism that is released with a short turn. The process is as follows:

- The door is slightly opened to give you access to the hinge.
- The small clip or lever on the hinge is gently pushed upwards or turned using a finger or a small tool.
- Then you can pull the hinge off the door frame – this is a proven quick-release system.

If you proceed carefully, no damage will occur to the door frame. But avoid applying too much force – otherwise, the plastic parts of the fitting can break.

I recommend using original IKEA replacement parts because the fit and mounting are precisely tailored to the Malm dresser. Universal hinges often don’t fit since they have different drill holes and dimensions, which can prevent the door from closing properly.

If the original fitting is damaged, you should try to repair it or order replacements directly from IKEA. When in doubt, a professional can assist, especially if the material is damaged.

Hello keflo and everyone here!

It’s great that you’re going into so much detail about the Malm hinge installation! 🙂

The key is not to rush when removing the hinges! 🙂 I often had difficulties before but then followed Sudan’s instructions step by step, and it worked perfectly.

One more tip from me: If you have a misaligned or loose door, first check if the hinge is properly engaged! If the mounting is loose, a small drop of threadlocker (Loctite) can help—but only a little, otherwise it’ll be hard to remove later.

Keep at it! I’m sure your hinge replacement will turn out great. Good luck, and feel free to share how it went! 🙂

Malm hinges can be removed after pressing the release catch.

Loosen the screws, pull the hinge off the furniture, and attach the new one.

Tools: A Phillips screwdriver is completely sufficient.
