Hello everyone,
I recently noticed that one of the side panels of my MALM chest of drawers is damaged. Specifically, there is a crack in the lower section, likely caused by accidental overload or impact.
My main question is: What is the best way to replace damaged MALM side panels without having to completely disassemble the entire piece of furniture? Are there any experiences with swapping out individual side panels, and if so, how does the process work in practice?
I have considered ordering the replacement part directly from IKEA, but I am also wondering if it might be worth looking for alternatives. Additionally, I would like to know the easiest method to remove the old side panels and how to fit the new part accurately.
Thanks in advance for any helpful tips and practical advice!

Ordering side panels from IKEA as spare partsThis is generally true, but IKEA does not always supply spare parts for all models. Often, it can also happen that the spare parts take a while to arrive or are no longer produced. Additionally, I would recommend first checking carefully whether only the side panel can be removed without dismantling the entire piece of furniture, as many MALM dressers have a complex locking system and load-bearing components.
It is worthwhile to fully understand the attachment points on the furniture before ordering or to look for user experiences from others.
In addition to the previous information: To replace the side panel, you first need to remove all drawers and, if necessary, partially disassemble the frame. The side panel is often secured with dowels and biscuits, which must be carefully detached without damaging the other joints.
My tip: There are PDF guides available online from IKEA and other repair instructions that specifically show the assembly process for the MALM series. These can help you remove the faulty part step by step.
When installing the new side panel, having a second person is also helpful, as the panels are often bulky and need to be precisely fitted.

Hey, that’s great that you want to tackle this yourself! 🙂 I had the exact same issue and just called IKEA – the staff were really helpful and ordered the replacement side panel for me.
A little tip: take your time and cover the work surface with a blanket to prevent any scratches. For disassembly, you’ll just need a screwdriver (Phillips and flathead) and some patience.
The reassembly went pretty quickly for me, and the part fits perfectly. So, don’t worry, you’ll definitely manage it! Good luck! 😉

Hello usleo,
I would like to provide you with a more detailed guide since you want to approach this task carefully:
1. Remove the drawers: Take out all the drawers to get better access to the side panels.
2. Detach the back panel: The back panel is usually fixed with small nails, which you can gently pry out using a small hammer and a flat tool.
3. Dismantle the side panel: The side panels are connected with dowels, biscuits, and screws. It’s best to mark the position of each connection with a pencil before unscrewing everything.
4. Prepare the new side panel: If you already have your replacement part, check all edges and holes for defects or misalignments.
5. Assembly: Insert the dowels and biscuits accordingly, position the side panel, and secure it with the screws.
6. Reinsert the back panel and drawers.
These steps may sound complex, but with the right preparation, it works well. If you need tool recommendations, feel free to ask!
