Hello everyone,
I recently noticed that one of the side panels of my MALM chest of drawers is damaged. Specifically, there is a crack in the lower section, likely caused by accidental overload or impact.
My main question is: What is the best way to replace damaged MALM side panels without having to completely disassemble the entire piece of furniture? Are there any experiences with swapping out individual side panels, and if so, how does the process work in practice?
I have considered ordering the replacement part directly from IKEA, but I am also wondering if it might be worth looking for alternatives. Additionally, I would like to know the easiest method to remove the old side panels and how to fit the new part accurately.
Thanks in advance for any helpful tips and practical advice!

some people replace the side panels with thinner plywoodIt is important to consider the stability of the dresser when doing this. The original Malm side panel significantly contributes to the overall strength of the piece, especially to evenly distribute the weight of the drawers.
A thinner panel could warp over time or affect the functionality of the drawers. Additionally, the mounting points are not easily compatible.
Anyone attempting such DIY alternatives should carefully measure and, if necessary, plan for reinforcements.

1. Remove drawers ... 6. Reinstall back panel and drawersThank you very much for your detailed response; it really helps me organize the work better.
I will take a closer look at the back panel, especially, since I wasn’t sure how securely it is fixed. If I understand correctly, I can carefully remove it without the furniture falling apart?
Also, I would be interested in any recommendations on how to best loosen the slats and dowels without damaging them – that would be important in case the side panel needs to be replaced or replacement parts don’t fit well.
