Good morning everyone,

I have noticed several dented edges on my BILLY shelf, likely caused by impact or during transport. Specifically, there are dents on the outer edges of the vertical panels and the front of the lower shelves, which are not only visually disturbing but could also affect the stability if the edges are severely damaged.

I am looking for practical solutions or repair methods to reverse or at least conceal these dented edges without having to completely dismantle the shelf. Are there established techniques that work with common DIY tools?

It would also be helpful to know if any special tools or materials (e.g., cushioning, heat gun, glue, filler) are necessary and what to watch out for during the repair to avoid causing further damage.

Thanks in advance for any tips and proven approaches!

Hello Aziz3,

For dented edges on BILLY shelves, I have had good experience using a soft wooden block and a hammer. Gently tap from the inside against the dent to push it out.

If that doesn’t work, use a small amount of wood filler to even out the surface, then sand and paint.

Hello Aziz3,

It’s an important point that you prefer a repair without full disassembly, as many suggestions usually recommend taking the entire unit apart. Here are some tips suitable for your situation:

1. Assess the damage: Are the dents only surface-level or are they deeper? In the first case, heat and moisture often suffice, while deeper damage usually requires filling.

2. Moisture and heat method: Slightly dampen a thin cloth, place it over the dent, gently heat the area with a heat gun (on low setting) or an iron (with a cloth in between), then carefully press the edge back into shape from the inside using a flat tool. This can help the wood fibers to lift again.

3. If the back panel or other parts aren’t obstructing, it’s advisable to partially disassemble the shelf to allow access from the inside.

4. Use a small amount of wood filler: After the initial heat treatment, you can use wood filler or a furniture repair kit to smooth out minor unevenness. Important: lightly sand the surface beforehand.

5. After filling, sand with fine-grit sandpaper (grit 240 or finer) to achieve a smooth finish.

6. Apply paint or a touch-up marker suitable for BILLY furniture to visually blend the repaired spots.

One tip: use nitrile gloves when working with filler and paint to avoid skin contact.

Be very careful with heat – too much can damage the surface!

More detailed information about the damage (depth of dents, affected parts) would be helpful so I or others can offer more precise advice.

I'm not sure if this method always works with BILLY shelves without significant disassembly, as the panels are often only 12mm (0.5 inches) thick and can easily splinter.

Furthermore, I wonder if this might actually cause more structural damage, since MDF or particleboard panels often remain permanently dented when subjected to impact.

I am rather cautious about this method, which comes from solid wood care, when applied to BILLY shelves. The surface is melamine-coated, which can swell due to moisture and heat.

Therefore, I would recommend first testing a small, inconspicuous area or preferably using professional repair kits designed specifically for furniture surfaces.

It would be helpful if we could also share experiences regarding suitable repair kits and how they perform in practice, especially with melamine-coated shelves.
