Hello everyone,
I own several pieces of furniture from the MALM series by IKEA and am wondering how to best extend the lifespan of these items.
Specifically, I am interested in care tips and maintenance measures that help minimize damage from moisture, mechanical stress, or wear and tear. I am also curious if there are any special products or methods that can prevent or delay material fatigue.
Since MALM furniture is mostly made of particleboard with a laminate surface, I am wondering how to handle these types of surfaces properly.
Does anyone have practical experience or background knowledge to provide a well-informed guide on how to keep MALM furniture in good condition for as long as possible? Thanks in advance!

Hello Kefefo,
I would suggest avoiding direct sunlight and moisture. Regular wiping with a slightly damp cloth helps to remove dust and dirt. It is also important not to use aggressive cleaning agents.
This is usually enough to keep the furniture looking good for a long time.

Hello Kefefo,
I would like to provide a more detailed explanation regarding the care and maintenance of MALM furniture, as the materials and construction have some specific characteristics.
MALM furniture is mostly made from coated wood-based panels (particleboard or MDF) with a foil or lacquer finish. The surface protects against moisture; however, the edges are often not fully sealed, which is the weak point. This can quickly lead to swelling if moisture penetrates.
My recommendations are:
1. Be very careful that no liquids remain on the surface for long. Wipe up immediately. For tabletops or surfaces where drinks are placed, I recommend using coasters.
2. Clean only with a damp cloth without chemical cleaners. A mild dish soap and water mixture is allowed if wiped off promptly.
3. Regularly check screws and connections and tighten them if necessary, as frequent use can loosen the joints. This prevents mechanical wobbling and premature wear.
4. When assembling, strictly follow the order of assembly steps and reinforce glued joints with wood glue if the furniture will be subjected to heavier use.
5. It is worthwhile to seal any damage on edges immediately with clear waterproof glue to prevent moisture from entering.
6. Remove dust regularly, especially in corners and drawer slides, to avoid unnecessary strain on the mechanics.
How do you use the furniture? Is it heavily used or mainly for display? Then I could provide more targeted suggestions for improvements.

Hello Kefefo,
I would like to address the topic of mechanical stress and the care of materials in a structured way to give you a small guide.
First, a brief overview: MALM furniture is generally in the affordable price range and usually consists of particleboard with a melamine-coated surface. These surfaces are resistant to scratches and moisture but still require some attention.
Here are my 5 most important tips:
1. Cleaning: Do not use abrasive cleaners. Simply wipe with a soft, damp cloth and for tougher dirt, add a little dish soap to the water. Avoid wiping with too much water and dry immediately afterward.
2. Avoid moisture: Edges are often not fully sealed. Water can penetrate here and cause the wood to swell. So wipe dry right away if anything spills.
3. Screws and joints: Screws tend to loosen with frequent use. Tightening them prevents wobbling and extends the lifespan.
4. Limit weight load: Avoid placing excessively heavy items on drawers or shelves to prevent warping or breakage.
5. Surface protection: Use placemats and coasters to keep heat and moisture away from the surfaces.
In summary: Care involves regular cleaning and checking screws and joints. Early detection and repair of minor issues significantly prolong the furniture’s life.
How have you been handling the furniture so far? Are there any problems that particularly bother you?

Hi,
That’s absolutely right! I had small corners coming loose on my MALM lowboard, and after gluing them back together, it looks as if nothing happened.
I also like to use felt pads under desk chairs or decorative items. This prevents constant debris from falling on the floor and protects the surface.
One more thing about moisture: I once accidentally spilled coffee on an unprotected dresser. Even though I wiped it up immediately, it still caused damage over time – so it’s better to keep coffee only on a tray or mat!
So, pay attention to protection and quick repairs, and your MALM pieces will stay clean and stable. 🙂

Here are some additional facts about the material structure of MALM furniture:
The core is usually made of particleboard, while the surfaces are typically coated with a melamine resin finish. Although this provides a durable surface, it is not invincible.
It is important to take care of the edge areas. These spots often experience moisture penetration because the coating there tends to be less effective at sealing. Water damage can cause swelling and wear.
A preventative measure can be the extra sealing of edges with special varnish or clear lacquer pen. This increases resistance to moisture.
Regular checking of screw connections is also necessary to maintain mechanical stability.
Furthermore, I recommend not placing furniture directly next to radiators or in areas with strong temperature fluctuations to avoid warping of the material.
For cleaning, continue to use only damp cloths with neutral cleaners—harsh cleaning agents will damage the melamine coating in the long term.
