Hello everyone,

I own several pieces of furniture from the MALM series by IKEA and am wondering how to best extend the lifespan of these items.

Specifically, I am interested in care tips and maintenance measures that help minimize damage from moisture, mechanical stress, or wear and tear. I am also curious if there are any special products or methods that can prevent or delay material fatigue.

Since MALM furniture is mostly made of particleboard with a laminate surface, I am wondering how to handle these types of surfaces properly.

Does anyone have practical experience or background knowledge to provide a well-informed guide on how to keep MALM furniture in good condition for as long as possible? Thanks in advance!

I have found that drawers are easier to maintain if you occasionally spray the sliding rails with a little silicone spray. This keeps the mechanism smooth and prevents squeaking or sticking.

Additionally, you should avoid overloading the furniture, especially the drawers. Excessive weight can cause uneven stress, which quickly damages the runners.

I think you shouldn’t expect too much from Malm furniture, but with a few tricks, you can really get a lot out of it. :-)

Do not place furniture directly on radiators or in areas with strong temperature fluctuations

I completely agree with that! I once had my Malm shelf above a small radiator, and after one winter the surface was warped and the edges had swollen. Since then, the furniture has been placed more carefully and lasts much longer.

Regular ventilation also helps prevent mold growth in the drawers. Just open the drawers from time to time, even if everything looks fine. This helps maintain good air circulation.

A small effort with great results!

Exactly, this is a point that is often overlooked. A bit of lubricant keeps the runners smooth and helps prevent wear.

I would also like to add that when tightening screws, it is very important not to overtighten, as this can cause chipboard to expand or crack quickly. Always proceed gently and gradually.

Conclusion: MALM furniture, when well cared for with attention to moisture protection, mechanical stability, and careful treatment of surfaces, lasts significantly longer than expected.
