Lisandro4422 May 2018 07:42Hello everyone,
I am currently in the process of setting up the children's room and have chosen IKEA Hemnes furniture because it seems sustainable and durable. Since I want to be especially careful with cleaning the furniture in the children's room, I am wondering: What is the best way to clean IKEA Hemnes furniture in a children's room without damaging the surface, especially the waxed solid wood, or leaving chemical residues that could be harmful to children?
I am looking for a gentle cleaning method that is still effective against dirt and possible fingerprints and ideally environmentally friendly as well. Are there any specific cleaning products or household remedies that work particularly well for this furniture series? And how often should this kind of cleaning ideally be done to keep the furniture in good condition, especially considering the heavily used surfaces in a children's room?
I look forward to your expert tips and experiences!

Hello Lisandro44,
thank you for your detailed question! IKEA Hemnes furniture is known for its waxed solid wood surface, which requires gentle care.
I recommend the following approach:
- For dusting and light dirt, a slightly damp, soft cloth is usually sufficient. It’s important to clean only with clear water and avoid using a too wet cloth to prevent the wood from swelling.
- For stubborn stains, you can gently clean with diluted, mild dish soap (just a few drops in water), then wipe again with a damp cloth and dry the piece of furniture immediately.
- Wax or oil treatment is generally not needed regularly, but at most once a year if you notice the surface becoming dull or the wax layer wearing off.
- Avoid aggressive cleaning agents, sprays, abrasives, or rough-textured microfiber cloths, as they can damage the natural wax finish.
- Also, always wipe in the direction of the wood grain when cleaning.
Regarding safety for children: Most common cleaning products contain chemicals that can leave residues on the surface. Therefore, dilution is important, and you should wipe the furniture with clear water afterward.
Ideally, dust the furniture lightly with a damp cloth regularly, about every 1–2 weeks, and perform more intensive cleaning only when necessary.
I hope this helps!

Hello Lisandro44,
I’d like to provide a more detailed guide on cleaning IKEA Hemnes solid wood furniture, especially when used in a children’s room. Dealing with common stains there (e.g., from colored pencils, glue, or food residues) requires some care.
Here is my brief guide for particularly gentle cleaning:
1. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cotton cloth helps to remove coarse dust and small particles.
2. When you need to remove dirt, use a slightly damp cloth with lukewarm water. Always wipe along the grain of the wood.
3. Avoid using harsh or foaming cleaning agents. Very aggressive cleaners or alcohol can damage the wax layer, causing the wood to swell or become dull.
4. For stronger stains, you can carefully use a small amount of (bio-certified) dish soap, heavily diluted. Important: Always follow with a clean, damp cloth (water only) to remove any residue.
5. Stubborn paint or glue residues can be gently removed with an eraser—but only very carefully and spot by spot.
6. If the furniture looks dull, waxes specially designed for waxed wood can be applied thinly. This also adds a layer of protection.
7. The furniture should always dry thoroughly—avoid leaving it damp for too long as this can damage the wood.
Since children’s rooms often experience small accidents, I recommend acting quickly and removing stains promptly to protect the surface.
If you need more detailed information about specific stain types, feel free to ask.
Best regards!

Especially with wax crayons or small spills, I am often unsure how quickly one should intervene to avoid damaging the surface.
Also, what do you think about home remedies like vinegar water or lemon juice on Hemnes furniture? I’ve often heard that these can damage the surface—is that true? Or are there exceptions?
Looking forward to your advice!

Good question, one I see often. Vinegar water and lemon juice are acidic. This can attack the protective wax layer on waxed solid wood and, in the worst case, make the surface dull or rough.
My advice: avoid acidic cleaners entirely on Hemnes or other waxed wooden furniture. If you want to use natural homemade solutions, it’s better to use a very mild soap mixture or just water.
If you ever get light limescale buildup (for example near windows), clean only the affected spots very sparingly with diluted vinegar and wipe immediately dry to prevent damage.
The most important thing is: never use acidic products over large areas and never leave them on the surface, otherwise you’ll end up with unwanted stains.
I hope this helps clarify your concerns!
