Hello everyone,
I am currently in the process of setting up the children's room and have chosen IKEA Hemnes furniture because it seems sustainable and durable. Since I want to be especially careful with cleaning the furniture in the children's room, I am wondering: What is the best way to clean IKEA Hemnes furniture in a children's room without damaging the surface, especially the waxed solid wood, or leaving chemical residues that could be harmful to children?
I am looking for a gentle cleaning method that is still effective against dirt and possible fingerprints and ideally environmentally friendly as well. Are there any specific cleaning products or household remedies that work particularly well for this furniture series? And how often should this kind of cleaning ideally be done to keep the furniture in good condition, especially considering the heavily used surfaces in a children's room?
I look forward to your expert tips and experiences!

Hey everyone!
Just a quick note from me: I really appreciate how everyone here focuses on gentle cleaning. In the nursery, you want to avoid using chemicals as much as possible.
What works for me is an “emergency kit” with three items:
- A microfiber cloth (but a very soft one, not abrasive)
- Mild dish soap (organic, fragrance-free)
- A piece of beeswax or furniture polish
If kids’ stuff sticks to the furniture, I lightly dampen the cloth, apply a tiny bit of dish soap, gently wipe the area, and then dry immediately. For shine, I occasionally use the beeswax. It’s simple, works great, and from my experience, it really helps keep the furniture looking good for a long time.
Oh, and: Not too much water! That’s really key.
Good luck to you, Lisandro44, and everyone else in the forum! 😉
