ᐅ How can I stabilize Malm furniture to withstand building vibrations?

Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my IKEA Malm furniture, specifically regarding its stability during minor building vibrations caused by nearby construction work. The furniture is placed quite close to a wall and seems to wobble or shift slightly when there are vibrations, which concerns me due to possible damage and safety risks.

I am particularly interested in options to make these relatively lightweight but tall pieces more stable without extensive drilling or significantly altering the wall. I am thinking of solutions like additional fasteners, clamp devices, or special anti-slip materials.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find reliable information, especially on solutions that are both practical and reversible, as I might want to move the furniture at some point.

Does anyone here have experience or recommendations on how to safely secure my Malm cabinets against these recurring but not very strong vibrations without damaging the furniture or modifying the wall?

Thanks in advance!

From a technical perspective, there are several important points to stabilize Malm furniture against building vibrations:

1. Wall attachment: The safest method. For load-bearing solid walls, screws and anchors can be used following the manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Tension rods: Effective and reversible, especially with high ceilings. Compression forces prevent tipping.

3. Increasing friction at the base: High-quality silicone anti-slip mats significantly improve grip on wood flooring.

4. Lowering the center of gravity: Placing heavy items in the lower section reduces the risk of tipping.

5. Material condition: Check the furniture for loose joints before securing it.

Recommendation:
A combination of tension rods and anti-slip mats is often the best choice if you prefer not to drill. However, effectiveness depends on specific conditions (furniture weight, ceiling height, floor covering).

The goal is to minimize both shear forces (lateral movement) and tipping moments.

An important aspect that is often overlooked is the regular maintenance of furniture joints. In Malm-style particleboard furniture, dowels and glued joints are commonly used, which can loosen due to vibrations.

My advice: Check all screws and connectors and tighten them if necessary. Well-fastened furniture withstands shocks much better.

Furthermore, I recommend not placing furniture directly against door frames or window frames, as vibrations tend to be stronger in these areas.

If you secure the furniture with wall mounts, as mentioned before, be sure to use appropriate anchors for brick walls and make sure not to drill too close to edges.
