Hello everyone,

I have several IKEA Hemnes shelves standing on a floor that unfortunately is not completely level and slightly flexible in some areas. This causes the shelves to wobble a bit, and I am concerned that over time this could lead to stability issues.

My question is: How can I stabilize IKEA Hemnes shelves on an unstable or uneven floor so that they stand securely and there is minimal risk of them tipping over or getting damaged?

I am also looking for solutions that are not too complicated or expensive, but I am open to more technically involved suggestions since I have access to a range of tools. I would appreciate any advice targeting both the assembly and securing of the shelves to the floor or the wall.

Thank you in advance!

To stabilize the Hemnes shelves on an uneven floor, use leveling feet under the shelves.

Additionally, I recommend always securing the shelves to the wall to prevent tipping. Alternatively, non-slip adhesive pads under the shelves can also help.

Hello Tiuspa,

Your concern is very reasonable, and especially with Hemnes shelves made of solid wood, it’s important to pay special attention to stability—particularly on uneven or flexible floors.

First, here are some basic tips, which I will organize clearly:

- Floor irregularities: If the unevenness is minor, it can often be compensated for with furniture glides or leveling feet available at hardware stores. These feet are screwed onto the shelf legs and are height-adjustable. This way, you can align the shelves perfectly level.

- Unstable floor: If the floor is soft or flexible, for example due to wooden floorboards or older screeds, it may help to create a solid base under the shelves. A sturdy, flat, and load-bearing wooden board beneath the shelves can solve many problems.

- Wall anchoring: Hemnes shelves are designed for wall mounting. Be sure to use the supplied wall anchors to prevent tipping. This is a safety measure that should not be overlooked, especially on unstable floors.

- Additional support: There are special angle brackets or molding strips that can be installed on the back of the shelves. These improve stability and prevent additional wobbling.

- Rubber mats or non-slip pads: Placed under the shelf feet, they prevent slipping, especially on smooth floors.

If you like, you can also tell me more about the type of floor. Is it an old floorboard, high-pile carpet, or something else? That can help refine the recommendation.

Best regards!

Exactly! If the floor is uneven, just build a steady base for your Hemnes shelves. Make it comfortable—place a board underneath, maybe even nicely painted or covered with carpet fleece!

And remember: wall mounting is the trump card in your hand that will never let your shelf fall. 😄

This way, you’ll have a shelf that not only stands firm but also looks a bit proud.

Hello Tiuspa,

I want to emphasize again why wall mounting is so important, especially on unstable ground. Many people underestimate the risk: even if the shelf stands firmly on the floor, a slight tilt can cause it to tip over when loaded or if someone bumps into it.

Also, if you already have an uneven surface, make sure not to just place the shelves but to adjust the feet using adjustable furniture glides or shims. This prevents the shelf from wobbling at the back or protruding at the front.

Additionally, with unstable floors, it’s a good idea to regularly inspect the floor covering – sometimes replacing or reinforcing the subfloor helps.

If you are handy, you can use longer screws for wall mounting and install additional wall anchors to achieve maximum safety.

If you have any questions about wall mounting or which materials are best suited, I’m happy to help.

Thanks in advance for your tips! My floor is an older wooden plank floor, which is partly not completely firm and has some slight bounce in certain spots. There are also some minor uneven areas.

The idea of using a wooden board as an underlayer makes a lot of sense to me. Is there anything I should consider regarding the material or thickness?

The Hemnes shelves are usually placed against the wall, and I have used the mounting screws so far, but I’m not sure if that is sufficient here.

Would it be advisable to additionally install, for example, angle brackets, or can that be mostly ignored?
