Hello everyone, I am planning to install Ikea Metod wall cabinets on a concrete wall at my home. I want to make sure the mounting is really stable and strong so the cabinets will hold securely over the long term and there is no risk of them falling down.

My concrete wall is very solid and without visible cavities, so I would like to know which wall plugs and screws are best suited for properly and safely fastening the Ikea Metod wall cabinets. Are there any additional measures I should definitely keep in mind, such as the recommended spacing between mounting points, special drilling techniques, or other tips when screwing into concrete?

For those who have done this before: What has been your experience with the Ikea Metod wall brackets specifically on concrete walls? Thanks for your detailed advice!

Hello nico52,

First of all, this is a topic that is often underestimated, but especially for wall cabinets like Ikea Metod on concrete walls, it is essential to choose the correct fasteners and the right installation method.

I assume you have a relatively smooth and stable concrete wall, not hollow-core or aerated concrete? This is important because for solid concrete walls, I highly recommend using high-quality expansion anchors or, even better, nylon wedge anchors combined with screws that are not too thin. A common guideline is 10 mm anchors for 8 mm screws.

Regarding the procedure:
- First, it is best to mark the exact position of the cabinet brackets on the wall and precisely mark the drill holes.
- Be sure to use a rotary hammer drill with a hammer drill bit suitable for concrete (e.g., an SDS-Plus drill bit).
- Drill with consistent pressure and avoid forcing the drill to prevent damage. Also, make sure the drill holes are at least 70–80 mm (3–3¼ inches) deep to provide sufficient grip.
- After drilling, carefully blow out the holes and then clean them with a brush to remove dust and debris, ensuring proper anchoring.
- Insert the anchors and gently tap them flush with the wall surface.

For Metod cabinet mounting, the distance between fixing points is crucial and usually predefined. Make sure the load is distributed evenly. If possible, I recommend anchoring the anchors in load-bearing areas of the wall (e.g., avoid drilling close to edges or corners).

If the cabinets will be heavily loaded, additional reinforcement with brackets or extra fasteners might be advisable.

I’m also interested: How tall are the cabinets and what loads are you planning? Then I can provide more precise recommendations.

I completely agree. At first, I also had concerns about whether everything would hold properly. When I installed my Metod wall cabinets on the concrete wall, I was initially unsure about the right type of anchors to use.

My tip: take your time when drilling. I was afraid at first of damaging the wall – it helps to go slowly and not apply too much pressure so the concrete doesn’t chip.

That really helped me because I skipped that step at the beginning and then the anchors did not hold as firmly as I had hoped.

And don’t hesitate to insert the anchors twice if you think they aren’t seated properly. Better safe than sorry.

I also found it useful to fully assemble the cabinets empty first and then hang them on the wall before loading them. That way, you can quickly tell if they are truly secure.

Here is the essential procedure for mounting Ikea Metod wall cabinets on concrete walls:
- Use a hammer drill with appropriate SDS drill bits
- Set a depth stop on the drill bit to about 7–8 cm (3–3¼ inches)
- Recommend nylon wedge anchor plugs with a diameter of 10 mm (⅜ inch)
- Use 8 mm (5⁄16 inch) thick screws, approximately 7 cm (2¾ inches) long
- Blow out and brush the drill holes after drilling
- Drive the anchors firmly flush with the surface
- Mount the cabinet empty and secure it

This ensures a very secure attachment. Pay close attention to the correct size of anchors and screws. If mounting multiple cabinets side by side, make sure the mounting brackets are evenly spaced to distribute the load properly.
