Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet and am now working on securing the interior fittings, especially the shelves, firmly and stably. I noticed that the usual plastic dowels and pins supplied by IKEA do not hold securely enough for heavier items.

My specific question is: How can I securely fasten IKEA Metod cabinet shelves so that they do not loosen or wobble under heavier loads or with frequent removal of drawers or baskets?

Are there any special techniques, alternative materials, or additional reinforcements that have proven effective in practice? I would appreciate tips that require minimal modifications to the cabinet body, as I want to keep the original parts intact.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and experiences!

For Metod, I recommend using the metal shelf supports, which are available as accessories. They are much stronger than the plastic clips. Simply snap them into the corresponding holes; they hold securely.

In my experience with securely mounting Metod cabinet shelves, the standard plastic pins tend to wear out and loosen over time, especially under heavy load. It is important that the supports fit precisely into the holes and do not wobble.

A proven solution is to use metal shelf supports from IKEA’s accessory range, as mentioned before. Alternatively, high-quality metal brackets or small wooden strips can be used for additional support.

Sometimes drilling slightly deeper or slightly larger holes can help fix metal supports more securely. These measures keep the cabinet carcass intact while significantly improving the stability of the shelf.

It is also useful to distribute the load well: when placing heavy items inside, it is better to use multiple supports rather than fewer supports bearing a very high load.

You’ve already received some really good advice! I’d like to add a small lifehack that worked great for me: instead of just using the original dowels, I got some small metal brackets and screwed them under the shelves as hidden mini supports.

This provides the shelf with much better stability without being very visible or requiring major changes to the cabinet carcass. And if needed, you can even reinforce more sensitive spots to handle the load.

It might sound a bit complicated at first, but with a cordless drill and small brackets, it’s done quickly. Plus, this way I keep my shelves flexible but much more stable.

I’m not criticizing the IKEA parts at all, but a bit of reinforcement never hurt anyone 😉
