Hello everyone, I am planning a move soon and have several IKEA BILLY shelves that I want to transport safely. My question is: What is the best way to secure BILLY shelves during transport or a move to prevent damage?
I am especially concerned about stability while driving, possible disassembly or securing of the shelves, and how to avoid scratches or breakage. Does anyone have tips on specific techniques, suitable materials, or personal experiences? Thanks in advance!

JEREMIAH3818 Aug 2016 08:22I understand your desire to transport everything as safely as possible. I used to feel the same way, especially with bulky furniture.
I agree that disassembly is always helpful, but during one move, I carried the BILLY bookcase whole – wrapped tightly with a large, thick ratchet strap to keep the structure intact.
It was padded between ceilings and every hole protected with cardboard. It worked well, although it required more careful handling at the start.
So: If you don’t have time to take it apart, make sure to spend that time reinforcing and padding it properly!

I would be interested to know how you best secure the back panelIn my opinion, the back panel is more of an issue with open shelving because it is thin and usually only nailed in place.
In addition to screws, you can use special furniture strips that are screwed to both the back panel and the carcass – this provides greater stability.
Regarding warping: store the boards on a clean, smooth surface, not directly on a rough floor. Always support them on at least two levels to prevent sagging.

I’ve always taken my BILLY shelves apart and packed all the screws into small bags. I wrapped the boards in old blankets and stacked them flat in the van. I would never transport them upside down or standing up, as they can easily fall over and might get damaged!
