Hello everyone, I am planning a move soon and have several IKEA BILLY shelves that I want to transport safely. My question is: What is the best way to secure BILLY shelves during transport or a move to prevent damage?

I am especially concerned about stability while driving, possible disassembly or securing of the shelves, and how to avoid scratches or breakage. Does anyone have tips on specific techniques, suitable materials, or personal experiences? Thanks in advance!

Basically, you should consider whether to transport the shelves fully assembled at all. A screwed-together BILLY shelf is stable, but the connections using dowels and screws are not designed for heavy movement.

I recommend disassembling the shelf if possible, as the back panel cardboard can be better protected and the individual parts can be packed separately.

If you do transport it assembled, be sure to reinforce the back panel with extra screws or nails, as this significantly improves stability. Straps and blankets for padding are essential in this case.

Additionally, any extra padding—bubble wrap, felt, blankets—is useful to avoid scratches and dents.

I would completely disassemble the shelves. Sort screws and parts into bags. Then wrap the boards with blankets or bubble wrap and stack them flat. This way, you avoid breaks and scratches.

Dismantling is essential. When taking apart, make sure to well-padded the shelves and side panels. Always handle the back panel separately, as it tends to tear easily.

Thanks already, that sounds reasonable. I’m interested in how you best secure the back panel – with more screws or other methods? And do you have tips for storing the boards without warping?

Also, I’m wondering if it makes a difference whether I transport the shelves lying down or standing up. Thanks!

This is an interesting topic! 🙂

I recommend securing the back panel additionally with small angle brackets, which you attach using screws. This prevents it from coming loose or the corners from splitting.

It is also important to stack the boards lying flat and not under too much pressure to avoid warping. Place some foam pieces or folded blankets between the individual boards for protection.

Transporting them in an upright position increases the risk of them falling over and puts more stress on the joints. So, fix them securely while lying down and cushion them well!
