Hello everyone, I have noticed small to medium-sized damages on the corners of several IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet fronts—some are slightly torn, and others have chipped edges. Since I prefer not to replace the fronts, I am looking for a way to properly repair these corners. I am interested in which materials and techniques have proven effective, whether there are specific wood or plastic fillers to use, how to smooth the surface afterward, and if it is still possible to paint or apply a veneer or laminate finish afterward without problems. Has anyone had experience repairing such damaged corners on Metod or similar kitchen fronts? I would appreciate advice on methods, tools, and potential issues to watch out for.

For damaged corners on IKEA Metod fronts, I recommend using wood filler or plastic filler. Clean the damaged area first, then apply the filler and sand it smooth. Afterwards, cover it with appropriate paint or veneer to reseal the surface.

Interesting that you immediately think of filler, sanjon. But aren’t these materials more suitable for minor damages? With larger corners, the filler can crack or chip off under stress. I would be interested to know if anyone has experience with how durable such repairs are on frequently used kitchen fronts. Wouldn’t it be more sensible to reinforce the corner with a small piece of wood or a plastic trim? Also, how does this affect the appearance of the surface? After the repair, you don’t want to end up with a cheap patchwork look.

Hello, I’m happy to help. The corners on Metod fronts often have a thin edge made of plastic or a melamine layer, which can be easily damaged by impacts. In my experience, repairs work best when you first carefully remove any loose parts and then rebuild the area using a high-quality wood or plastic filler. After that, the filler should be sanded very finely and touched up with a matching acrylic paint or paint pen. It is important to match the color exactly to ensure the surface looks uniform afterward. For larger corner damages, I sometimes use additional reinforcements made from thin veneer wood or special edging strips, which are attached with waterproof wood glue. If you plan to paint, I recommend lightly sanding the front beforehand to improve paint adhesion. When applying a laminate film, it is crucial that the repair area is completely smooth, otherwise any unevenness will be immediately visible.

Apply filler, sand smooth, paint – this is the standard method. For larger damages, use wood glue and small wooden pieces. Important: Clean everything thoroughly and allow to dry well beforehand.

I can understand why you’re hesitant to simply replace the cabinet fronts. It’s great that you want to try repairing them, as it’s frustrating when small blemishes ruin the appearance. For me, the repair took a bit of courage—I wasn’t sure if the surface would really hold up afterward. What I recommend is taking your time and not rushing the filling and sanding process. Especially around the corners, you can quickly tell if the result is stable and looks good. Also, if you use the right products and work carefully, the repairs will hardly be noticeable later on. This gives a little sense of accomplishment, too, since the kitchen ends up looking like new again.
