Hello everyone,

I have noticed some unpleasant scratches on my IKEA Malm furniture that I would like to remove without further damaging the surface. Since Malm products are usually made of particleboard with a plastic coating, I want to know which methods are truly effective and gentle on the material for removing or concealing these scratches.

Does anyone have experience with specific care products, home remedies, or repair kits suitable for Malm furniture? I am especially looking for tips that work on small to medium scratches without having to sand down or repaint the entire surface.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Application: Press the wax into the scratch, remove excess material with a soft cloth, then gently polish with a specialized furniture polish.

This description is accurate. I would like to add that it can be useful to treat the furniture surface after the repair with a high-quality furniture care product that refreshes the plastic finish. This creates a more uniform appearance and extends the durability of the repair.

In my experience, repair wax not only fills the scratches but also, through subsequent polishing, prevents the surface from looking dull. This way, the typical Malm sheen remains largely preserved.

One last note:

Please avoid trying to remove scratches with coarse sanding pads or steel wool. This would be counterproductive for MALM furniture, as the plastic coating would be permanently damaged.

If the scratches are very deep and you don’t have a suitable repair kit available, you can also try applying a thin layer of clear lacquer for plastic surfaces, which can be found in hardware stores. This should be applied very carefully in a thin and even coat using a fine brush. However, caution is advised to avoid creating unsightly transitions.

Overall, gentle repairs using wax and maintenance oil are usually the gentlest method.
