Hello everyone, I am currently facing the task of removing the drawers from my IKEA Malm dresser set because I want to carry out some repairs and also clean the drawer slides. However, I want to do this as carefully and efficiently as possible to avoid damaging the drawers or the slides.

My question is: How do I properly remove and reinstall Malm drawers? Is there a specific order or technical details I should pay close attention to, especially as a beginner?

I have noticed that some drawers have a release clip or mechanisms on the slides – how exactly do I safely disengage these? And how can I ensure that the drawer is reinstalled correctly afterward, so it doesn’t stick or run unevenly?

Thank you in advance for any tips, step-by-step instructions, or warnings about common mistakes!

Hello Guturo,

To remove MALM drawers, the following standard procedure is recommended:

1. Pull the drawer out as far as it will go.
2. In most MALM models, the drawers are secured with metal levers on the sides of the rails. These levers need to be pressed or lifted simultaneously (depending on the model) to release the drawer from the rails.
3. Then, pull the drawer out completely.

For reinstallation:

1. Carefully slide the drawer back into the side rails.
2. Push the drawer fully into the cabinet until it clicks into place.

It is important to operate both levers correctly at the same time to avoid damaging the drawer slide. Keep an eye on the metal mechanism and move smoothly and steadily to prevent any jamming.

Good luck!

Pull the drawer completely out, press the lever upward on both sides, then remove the drawer entirely.

For installation: align the rail, slide the drawer in until the levers click into place. Done.

I wanted to ask again: I have noticed slight differences in the metal lever mechanisms on my MALM dresser. For the bottom drawer, for example, I need to pull the levers upward, while for the top drawer, I have to press them slightly to release the drawer.

What is the best approach if the mechanisms differ? Is it possible to pull the drawer out with slight force, or is there a risk of damaging the mechanism?

Also, I would like to know if the drawer slides can be easily removed during cleaning without needing to readjust them afterward.

With MALM models, there are indeed slight variations in the lever mechanisms. You should avoid using force, as the rails and levers are delicate and can break easily.

I recommend:
- Carefully observe both levers and test how each one works before tightening.
- Never force the levers; move them gently—sometimes slightly wiggling the drawer helps to properly release the mechanism.

For removing the rails:
- Yes, the drawer slides are usually secured with either click mechanisms or screws.
- After cleaning, it is advisable to carefully snap them back into the correct track.
- Usually, no adjustment is needed as long as you ensure proper alignment during reinstallation.

If in doubt, quickly check the instructions for the MALM series on the IKEA website; they often provide very helpful exploded diagrams and tips.
