Hello everyone, I have a somewhat complex question and hope to get your experiences and advice: How can I effectively protect my Billy shelves from moisture in the basement? I want to prevent the material from swelling, molding, or being damaged, as the basement is somewhat damp, especially during the cold season. What measures are useful to ensure the shelves remain durable and stable for as long as possible? Are there any specific products or methods you would recommend to best protect the wood or coating against moisture? I would appreciate it if you could share your practical experiences!

Hey Selami5, it’s great to see you putting so much thought into this! 🙂 From my experience, it’s really important to make sure the shelf isn’t placed directly on the basement floor – even a little gap makes a big difference! Imagine small wooden blocks or rubber feet underneath to prevent moisture from sitting on the wood. 😊 I’ve also used spray-on water repellents that make the wood resistant to moisture. That’s super convenient and offers solid protection! One more tip: regularly ventilate the basement to avoid any buildup of humidity! Good luck protecting your BILLY shelves!!!

Hello Selami5, your question is very well posed and relevant for many who want to place BILLY shelves in more humid rooms such as basements. I would recommend a multi-step approach: First, you should measure the relative humidity in the basement and try to keep it consistently below 60%, as above this threshold wood moisture reaches critical levels. A permanent solution would be either using a dehumidifier or making structural improvements to the basement.

Second, regarding the shelves themselves, I advise you to protect the backs of the BILLY shelves against moisture. This means either installing an additional backing made of water-resistant material or treating the original back panel with impregnating paint or varnish. Before assembly, I also recommend treating the wooden parts with a water-repellent wood preservative. Make sure the coating is applied thinly and evenly to avoid warping caused by uneven drying.

Additionally, you can place an underlay mat made of PE foam or a similar material beneath the shelf to keep moisture from the floor away. It is important that the floor surface is reasonably level and dry. Have you implemented any other measures for moisture control in the basement? That can be very helpful for the overall strategy.

Place the BILLY shelves off the floor. Use rubber feet or wooden slats that do not come into direct contact with moisture. Ventilate the room regularly to prevent moisture buildup. Treat raw wood surfaces with varnish or wood preservative.

It is best to use moisture-resistant underlays, such as plastic sheets, beneath the shelves. Regular heating or using a dehumidifier in the basement also reduces the risk of moisture damage.

Currently, there are no technical measures in place, except that I occasionally ventilate the basement myself. However, this is hardly feasible through the windows during the cold season, so it often doesn’t happen. I haven’t used any dehumidifiers so far. Thanks for the tip about backing boards and coatings – I hadn’t considered that before, but it makes sense. If I apply such a coating, should that be done before assembly? I have also read that moisture can accumulate between joints.
