Hello everyone, I have a somewhat complex question and hope to get your experiences and advice: How can I effectively protect my Billy shelves from moisture in the basement? I want to prevent the material from swelling, molding, or being damaged, as the basement is somewhat damp, especially during the cold season. What measures are useful to ensure the shelves remain durable and stable for as long as possible? Are there any specific products or methods you would recommend to best protect the wood or coating against moisture? I would appreciate it if you could share your practical experiences!

If I apply a coating like that, should it be done before assembly? Exactly, that is very important! I would recommend treating the parts before cutting or at least thoroughly painting them before assembly. This way, you cover all surfaces, including the edges that are otherwise hard to reach. The advantage is achieving an even seal that significantly reduces moisture penetration.

Place small wooden blocks or rubber feet underneath is also a very good tip. While this won’t prevent moisture from the ground completely, it does avoid direct contact, which usually causes the damage. If the basement is very damp, consider using dehumidifiers. This can add an extra level of protection.
I know the problem, Selami5 – I also had BILLY shelves in a damp basement and wasn’t sure if the protection would be enough. What helped me was choosing the right products that promise wood protection, but also making sure the shelves are never placed flush against the wall so air can circulate. I also found it important to ventilate the basement well at least occasionally, even though this can be difficult in the colder months. Sometimes basements are just challenging. But the small steps you are already taking or planning are great, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that everything works out! 🙂
