ᐅ How do I properly secure Ikea Pax wardrobe doors to the wall?

LeahguHello everyone,
I recently purchased an Ikea Pax wardrobe and am currently assembling the doors. Now I’m wondering how to properly attach the wardrobe doors to the wall so they are stable and open and close smoothly. I have already studied the Ikea instructions, but they mainly cover how to attach the doors to the cabinet frame. My wall is quite solid, made of concrete, and I want to avoid the doors coming loose or sagging over time.
Are there any special tips or professional methods for mounting the doors directly to the wall? Do I need to use specific wall anchors or screws, or even additional brackets? How can I ensure optimal alignment? I would also appreciate advice on load distribution in case the doors are very heavy.
Who has experience with securely and permanently attaching Ikea Pax wardrobe doors directly to the wall? Thanks in advance!

Hello Leahgu,
There are some important points to consider when attaching the Ikea Pax wardrobe doors directly to the wall to ensure everything is stable and functions reliably.
- First: The doors are usually mounted on the cabinet frame, not directly on the wall. So if you plan to fix the doors in a way that they touch or are attached to the wall, that is not standard practice and puts unnecessary strain on the hinges and wall brackets. The doors hang on the frame using special furniture hinges (e.g., clip hinges).
- If you mean that the cabinet frame itself will be secured to the wall, then heavy-duty anchors for concrete are ideal. This will hold the wardrobe securely in place and prevent it from shifting. Use screws of sufficient length and the original Ikea wall brackets that come with the Pax wardrobe.
- For alignment: The hinges are adjustable, often in three directions. This allows you to align all doors precisely to the millimeter after the cabinet frame is firmly installed.
- Load distribution: It is important that the cabinet frame is firmly attached to the wall, not the doors. The doors carry very little load; the wall primarily supports the whole piece of furniture.
Have you already assembled the cabinet frame? And can you explain your idea for attaching the doors to the wall in more detail? That way, I can give you more precise advice.

If you mean that the cabinet body should be fixed to the wall, then heavy-duty anchors for concrete are ideal. Thanks for the quick reply! Exactly, the cabinet body is attached to the wall using the original wall brackets and heavy-duty anchors. My question actually concerns the doors. I noticed that one of the doors is slightly misaligned, even though I have adjusted the hinges. I was wondering if, in addition to the normal hinge attachment, there is a way to secure or stabilize the doors directly to the wall, especially to prevent warping under heavy use.
Of course, normally the hinges hold the door, but in an older building with somewhat uneven walls, this could be a long-term issue. So, is there a way to provide extra mounting support to stabilize the door without overloading the hinges or damaging the cabinet? That’s my concern.
Thanks!

Is there a way to stabilize the door during installation without overloading the hinge or damaging the cabinet? To be honest: attaching the door directly to the wall makes little sense from a mechanical perspective. The hinges on the cabinet are specifically designed to support the load and allow movement. If the wall or cabinet is uneven, it’s better to properly align the cabinet itself or use small shims instead of fixing the door directly to the wall.
Screwing the door directly to the wall could cause it to warp or damage the hinges, which would be counterproductive.
I would recommend making all adjustments through the hinges and, if necessary, aligning the cabinet with spacer blocks or shims before attaching anything additional to the door. Where exactly is the door hung, top or bottom? Small felt pads or bumpers might also help improve the movement.
- Doors are always hung on the cabinet frame.
- Attach the cabinet frame to the wall using appropriate anchors.
- Hinges are adjustable; use them for alignment.
- No direct contact between the door and the wall is necessary.
- Slight unevenness can be easily corrected using shim strips on the cabinet frame.

The hinges work best only when the carcass is truly stable and squared. The tip to use felt pads on the inside edges of the doors helps prevent scratches from light contact.
One more point: if the wall is very uneven, you can also place small washers behind the wall brackets to adjust the spacing. This relieves tension on the furniture and keeps the door straight.
Also, if you feel the weight of the doors is causing issues, look for special metal reinforcements for the hinges, which are also available as replacement parts. These increase stability.
How many doors have you installed? With three or more, alignment can get a bit more complicated.
