Hello everyone,
I recently installed an Ikea Metod kitchen drawer, which has become noticeably loose over time. The problem is that the drawer no longer closes firmly and rattles when touched. I suspect that either the drawer slides are loose or the fasteners (such as screws or dowels) are no longer holding securely.
My question to the community: How can I permanently and reliably fix a loose Ikea Metod drawer? What steps are recommended to identify the cause and resolve the issue without having to take the entire unit apart? I am also interested in tips on suitable tools and replacement parts if needed.
I look forward to your advice and experiences!

My question to the community: How can I permanently and reliably repair a loose Ikea Metod drawer?Hello,
I’m happy to provide you with a structured guide that should help you fix it permanently:
- First, completely remove the drawer and check the slides (Metod usually uses the Meta Kulisse or similar runners). See if the screws on the slides are loose.
- If they are, tighten them. Often, just retightening is enough.
- If the screw holes are stripped and can no longer hold the screws, carefully drill the holes on the inside of the cabinet slightly smaller or use wooden dowels or wood filler to securely fix the screws again.
- Also check the guide rails on the drawer itself. If the screws there are loose, fasten them properly.
- Important: Inspect the locking mechanism on the sliding rail—if that’s broken, it causes permanent looseness.
- If the cabinet frame is warped, this can also cause wobbly drawers. In that case, you might need to reinforce it with brackets.
Tools needed: torque screwdriver, possibly wood glue and dowels, sandpaper, pliers.
By following these steps systematically, you will usually have a stable drawer again within a day. If you like, I can recommend specific products or replacement parts from a hardware store.

I completely understand how frustrating a loose drawer can be. This happens to me frequently with my Metod drawers, especially when they are heavily used. What helped me was removing the entire drawer, checking all the screws, and then specifically filling any damaged screw holes with wood filler. After that, I carefully sanded the area and used entirely new screws. Once the filler dried, the drawer felt solid again and it was much more reassuring, without the constant worry of it rattling again.
Bringing the right amount of patience is important. I also tried just tightening the screws several times, but long-term success only came after repairing the holes.

If the screws have worn out and no longer hold, carefully drill the holes on the inside of the cabinet slightly smaller or use wooden dowels or wood filler to secure the screws again. This method is technically correct. I would like to add that IKEA Metod often uses MDF or particleboard material, which can break out easily. Therefore, it is advisable to use larger wooden dowels (plus appropriate drilling) for severely worn holes rather than just wood filler, as the filler can become brittle over time.
Additionally, using special threaded inserts or nut inserts can be useful if the material seems very soft in that area. This creates much more stable fastenings for the drawer slides.
Tools needed: drill, wood filler, dowel set, possibly threaded inserts, as well as a precise screwdriver or cordless drill with adjustable torque.

I can understand how frustrating a loose drawer can be.Thank you for the encouraging words and the tips on preparation. I’m especially interested in the point about wood filler: Is there anything I should consider when choosing the filler to ensure the material is compatible with my Metod cabinet front? I assume the surface needs to be flush and stable so the screws can grip properly again.

If anyone has recommendations for a specific wood filler or replacement screws with a good length, I would be very grateful.
I want to avoid having the same problem again after a short time.
