Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of installing a series of IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets in a very tight space. The ceiling height is standard, but the gap between the wall and adjacent furniture and doors is so narrow that there is almost no room to work or maneuver the cabinet parts. I am especially interested in how to make the installation more efficient – are there practical tips for assembling and adjusting Metod cabinets optimally in confined spaces?

Which preparation steps can I complete on site to ensure smooth installation and alignment? Do you use any small tools or specific assembly sequences to avoid risks such as scratches or parts getting stuck?

For those with experience installing Metod cabinets in limited space conditions: what techniques or tricks would you recommend to carry out the installation as stress-free and precise as possible despite the restricted workspace?

Thanks in advance for your concrete tips and advice!

Your question makes a lot of sense, as the installation of IKEA Metod cabinets is often underestimated, especially when space is limited.

As a general recommendation, carry out a preliminary assembly of the individual parts on site. This means: first assemble the carcasses (carcass = the basic cabinet boxes) without the doors and drawers. You can fully connect all carcass parts except for the back panel, which should remain unattached. This way, the elements stay movable and can be better adjusted and repositioned.

Preparing the screws and connectors in small containers also helps to keep track of everything and avoid searching during work.

For adjustment: it’s best to use a small protractor and a spirit level to align each element precisely. In tight spaces, assembly is much easier when using a cordless drill with an angled adapter, allowing you to reach screws that are difficult to access.

Note on maneuvering: use simple plastic pads or felt gliders under the cabinet feet to move the carcasses more easily without causing scratches.

Do you have restrictions in width or only in depth? How tight is the access to the assembly area? These factors can further influence the recommended steps.

When assembling Metod cabinets in tight spaces, the following helps:

- Sort individual parts in advance
- Pre-assemble carcasses without doors completely
- Attach the back panels last
- Use a cordless screwdriver with a small bit
- Move cabinet parts on the floor using felt pads

This reduces slipping and scratches during fitting.

In addition to the previous tips, I recommend sorting screws and fittings carefully before assembly and keeping them within easy reach next to the work area in small bags or boxes. This helps avoid wasting time searching in tight spaces.

Furthermore, assembly should generally follow this sequence:

- First, fully assemble the carcasses without the back panels
- Position and align the carcasses using minimal tools
- Assemble doors and drawers separately
- Attach the back panels last to allow for minor adjustments

Precise planning of where each cabinet unit will go is especially important in confined spaces. It might be helpful to fully assemble individual carcasses outside the room and then install them once there is enough space.

Can you specify how tight the space really is? Maneuverability during installation can be affected if passageways are narrower than 70cm (27.5 inches).
