Hello everyone,

I am planning to install several Ikea Metod cabinets in my home. However, since the walls are made of different materials – partly concrete, partly drywall (plasterboard), and one wall made of brick – I am wondering how to securely and reliably fix the cabinets to each of these surfaces.

I would especially like to know which anchors and screws are best suited for the different wall types and whether there are any important points to consider during wall preparation or installation to avoid damage to the wall or the furniture.

Does anyone have experience mounting Ikea Metod systems on such varied substrates? An overview of suitable fastening materials, helpful tips on tools and procedures, or advice on specific considerations for each wall type would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Fundamentally, the type of fasteners used and the wall preparation depend on the wall material.

For concrete or solid brick walls, I recommend:
- Using heavy-duty anchors (e.g., universal anchors or expansion anchors) with appropriate heavy-duty screws.
- Pre-drilling with a hammer drill to ensure clean holes.

For drywall (plasterboard) walls, fastening is naturally more demanding since plasterboard alone does not provide sufficient load-bearing capacity:
- Use special drywall or cavity anchors (toggle anchors, butterfly anchors, metal cavity anchors).
- Ideally, anchors should be fixed into the load-bearing metal or wooden studs behind the drywall.

Important:
- Consider the loads on all walls and plan for more fastening points with heavy shelving systems.
- Check for electrical wiring or plumbing in the wall before installation to avoid damage.

Additionally, mounting rails on the wall should be precisely aligned and checked with a spirit level to ensure straight hanging.

I hope this helps for now.

Hello Recepfar,

I would like to add some practical tips for securely mounting Ikea Metod shelves on different wall types.

- For concrete walls: it is best to always use a hammer drill and drill generously in advance. Heavy-duty anchors (including metal anchors) are ideal for Metod shelves, as they will securely hold the weight later.

- For brick walls, similar advice applies, but depending on the texture of the bricks, choose anchors with special adhesion properties (e.g., nylon anchors with long expansion arms).

- Drywall (plasterboard) is the most fragile wall type. You should definitely place the mounting points onto the studs (wood or metal) behind the drywall. If this is not possible, use high-quality hollow wall anchors designed specifically for heavy loads. Toggle bolts with metal clips are more stable than plastic variants.

- For all wall types, it is advisable to check for electrical wiring or plumbing before drilling, using a cable and pipe detector.

- If the wall surface is uneven due to wallpaper or plaster, it can be helpful to pre-drill the mounting rail slightly or apply a primer to ensure the screws hold securely.

- Don’t forget to select the appropriate screw size (length and diameter) according to the anchor depth so that they engage properly and are not too short.

In summary:
- Choose anchors and screws suitable for the wall material
- Use the right tools (hammer drill for concrete/brick)
- Check the wall for wiring and pipes before installation
- Distribute the load across multiple mounting points

With this, you’ll be well prepared for installing the Metod shelves. Good luck!

To add: The choice of anchors should not only depend on the wall material but also on the expected load. METOD shelves tend to be quite heavy, especially when fully loaded.

For concrete, a hammer anchor using special metal fasteners designed for heavy loads is recommended. This ensures a stable and durable fastening.

When dealing with solid brick, it is important that the anchor is long enough to grip well behind the plaster layer. Nylon or universal anchors are commonly used, and depending on the drill hole size, special toggle bolts might also be suitable.

Drywall requires the most preparation, as the panels only cover the wall’s inner structure. It is better to mount directly onto the underlying studs or profiles instead of using hollow wall anchors alone. If mounting on the panel surface is the only option, multiple anchors should be used, and the maximum allowable load per anchor must be observed.

Additionally, I recommend leveling and securing the mounting rails precisely and in multiple points to avoid any tilting or warping of the shelves later on. The shelves should be evenly loaded to prevent point loads on a few anchors.

The above points are essential for a functional and long-lasting installation.
