Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some Ikea Hemnes furniture, mainly dressers and shelves, which we plan to put in the children’s rooms. Since I know these pieces are not inherently fully childproof, I’m wondering how best to modify or retrofit them myself to ensure safety for toddlers.

Specifically, I’m interested in methods to:
- prevent the furniture from tipping over,
- make drawers and doors childproof (i.e., securely lock them in a child-friendly way),
- and minimize any sharp edges or injury risks.

Are there any proven modifications or accessories that work particularly well with Hemnes furniture? I would prefer not to make major structural changes to the furniture, but rather add secure enhancements.

I’m grateful for any tips, experiences, or specific product recommendations that effectively help make the furniture safe for children.

Thank you in advance!

3. Protection against injuries:
- Edge protectors made of soft material are ideal. You can focus these on small areas where children often bump themselves.

I agree with that. Additionally, I would like to point out that Hemnes furniture has rather solid edges, but depending on the location of the furniture, different risk potentials exist. For example, edge protectors are especially recommended on furniture in areas where children often play or run around.

I prefer not to drastically alter the furniture structure but rather add safe supplements.

Therefore, reversible solutions such as magnetic locks and adhesive edge protectors are usually the best choice, as they can be easily removed if needed and leave no visible marks. If you’re interested, I can recommend some products that are specifically suitable for Hemnes furniture.
