Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some Ikea Hemnes furniture, mainly dressers and shelves, which we plan to put in the children’s rooms. Since I know these pieces are not inherently fully childproof, I’m wondering how best to modify or retrofit them myself to ensure safety for toddlers.

Specifically, I’m interested in methods to:
- prevent the furniture from tipping over,
- make drawers and doors childproof (i.e., securely lock them in a child-friendly way),
- and minimize any sharp edges or injury risks.

Are there any proven modifications or accessories that work particularly well with Hemnes furniture? I would prefer not to make major structural changes to the furniture, but rather add secure enhancements.

I’m grateful for any tips, experiences, or specific product recommendations that effectively help make the furniture safe for children.

Thank you in advance!

To prevent tipping with Hemnes dressers, I strongly recommend using the included wall anchors. These are sturdy enough to ensure a secure attachment.

For childproofing drawers and doors, there are various retrofit options:
- Magnetic child safety locks that are mounted inside and not visible from the outside
- Mechanical latch locks operated by a simple lever

To protect against sharp edges, corner protectors made of soft plastic or silicone are suitable and can be discreetly installed.

It is important to follow the assembly instructions carefully and check regularly, as movement or changes in the furniture’s position can affect safety.

Hey, great question! I can tell you from my own experience that securing Hemnes furniture to the wall is an absolute game changer! 😊 Especially a must for younger children.

I also used magnetic child safety locks, which are really convenient because you can still easily open the doors and drawers yourself when needed.

And another tip: make sure to get the soft edge protectors for the corners! My two little ones bumped into them quite often before, and ever since, it’s been peaceful.

So: securing + safety locks + edge protection = a safe AND nice kids’ room!

Hello teojose48,

I want to structure my response as clearly as possible to give you good guidance:

1. Securing against tipping:
- In general, the Hemnes furniture comes with appropriate wall anchors. Make sure to use all of them and to attach them to solid wall points.

2. Making drawers and doors childproof:
- There are locks specifically designed for Ikea furniture, such as flexible magnetic locks or latch locks. It is important that they can only be opened with some effort by adults.
- You can also install so-called “drawer locks” with adhesive strips or screws on the inner frame.

3. Protection against injuries:
- Soft edge protectors are ideal. You can focus these on small areas where children often bump themselves.

If you like, I can also compile a list of specific products and sources. It is important that you follow the installation instructions carefully.

Use wall anchors.
Purchase child safety locks for drawers and doors from a specialist supplier.
Apply corner protectors to all sharp edges.
Regularly check that everything is still securely attached.

In addition to the points mentioned, I recommend lining the inside of the drawers with non-slip mats. This prevents items from sliding out quickly when the drawers are opened.

Although it may sound trivial, it is safer not to store heavy objects in the top drawers to reduce the risk of the furniture tipping over.
