Hello everyone, I recently bought some Ikea Besta furniture and, with small children in the house, I want to make it as childproof as possible. However, it is very important to me that the appearance of the furniture is not affected – especially no visible locks or oversized latches that would spoil the clean look. My question to you is: What options are there to childproof Ikea BESTA furniture without compromising its appearance? Ideally, there should be discreet safety devices that still effectively prevent children from opening drawers or doors. I look forward to your tips and experiences!

I fully understand the dilemma – safety is important, but without compromising the appearance. From my own experience, I can say that magnetic locks work very well, but especially for younger children, it takes some time for them to understand that they cannot open the doors without a key. Patience and consistent explanation are also part of the solution.

Simple and discreet, self-adhesive bars on the inside of the frame require no drilling and leave no visible marks. They are much more affordable but are only suitable for light loads.

Simply attach child safety locks on the inside of doors. Magnetic locks are great but more expensive and require some skill to install.

Isn't it a bit paradoxical that we want to preserve the minimalist, beautiful look of the furniture while at the same time "barricading" it?

Someone is speaking the bitter truth here. Perhaps the child safety measure that least disrupts the look isn't a lock or barrier on the furniture itself, but rather the deliberate decision to prevent children from entering certain rooms. Wouldn't that be the more consistent solution?

When magnetic locks are installed correctly, they are not visible from the outside and provide reliable security. A good balance between safety and aesthetics.

Thanks to everyone, especially those with experience in magnetic solutions. I will definitely start with some initial tests using such a lock and pay close attention to the quality of installation. I might also combine it with discreet internal bolts if I need extra security for certain drawers. The issue of child safety is still not straightforward, and your contributions have been very helpful.
