SionkeHello everyone,
I have a somewhat special question and hope to get some experienced advice here. I own several Ikea Hemnes furniture pieces, mainly cabinets and dressers, which I would like to protect effectively from moisture and mold.
My problem: The indoor climate in my apartment tends to be somewhat humid, especially during the winter months, and I am concerned that the furniture might suffer damage over time. The Hemnes series is mainly made of solid wood, which is generally sensitive to high humidity, so I want to take appropriate measures to prevent mold growth or long-term damage.
My questions are:
- What are the best methods to effectively protect an Ikea Hemnes furniture piece from moisture?
- What preventive steps do you recommend to avoid mold formation?
- Are there specific sealants, treatments, or placement options that are particularly suitable?
Thank you very much, and I look forward to your answers!

Hello Sionke,
I really think it’s great that you’re addressing this early and want to protect your Hemnes furniture! 😊 They are really nice, but moisture can definitely cause problems for them. Here are a few tips from my experience:
- Avoid placing the furniture directly against exterior walls or on cold floor surfaces, as this encourages moisture buildup.
- Use a dehumidifier in the room if the humidity rises above 60%.
- Sealing with furniture wax or a specialized wood wax works well for Hemnes, as it reduces the wood’s water absorption.
Regular ventilation is also important – if possible, use shock ventilation to prevent the furniture from staying in constantly damp air.
Keep at it; it will pay off! Your furniture will thank you!

Hello,
first, it is important to know that Ikea Hemnes is made of solid pine, which naturally absorbs moisture but is relatively resistant to dampness. However, prolonged high humidity levels can still lead to a risk of mold.
Here are some specific recommendations:
- Indoor humidity should ideally be maintained between 40% and 60%. Higher levels promote mold growth.
- Furniture placement: Keep at least 5 cm (2 inches) distance from exterior walls to prevent condensation.
- Surface treatment: Furniture oil or hard wax oil are suitable because they protect the wood against moisture penetration without compromising its breathability.
- Regular inspection and cleaning of the furniture, especially on the back side.
- Ventilation: Air out the room by fully opening windows at least three times daily to ensure proper air exchange.
Sealing the wood with varnish is not recommended, as it closes the surface and may trap moisture underneath.
In summary: regulate the indoor climate, position the furniture correctly, and use natural oils; this is the most effective way to protect Hemnes furniture from moisture and mold.

Hello Sionke,
I would like to add a few additional tips, as solid wood furniture like Hemnes can be quite sensitive to moisture.
In addition to the points already mentioned, you might consider the following measures:
- Elevate furniture feet: To raise the furniture slightly off the floor and avoid direct contact with potentially damp floors.
- Use moisture absorbers: Place salt or silica gel packets inside the cabinet to absorb moisture directly.
- Monitor indoor climate: There are small digital hygrometers that can display air humidity inside the cabinet or room, providing early warnings.
- Avoid placing wet items inside the furniture: Damp textiles or stored goods increase moisture exposure inside the furniture.
I also recommend treating less sensitive furniture parts (e.g., drawers) on the inside with an additional wood protectant (natural wood oil). A natural finish never hurts.
This way, you can protect the Hemnes quite well against moisture for a longer period.

Sealing with varnish is not recommended, as it seals the wood and could trap moisture beneath the layer.Thank you for the important advice! This is especially relevant for me because I had actually considered using clear varnish to make the furniture more durable.
So I will probably opt for oils instead. Could you or someone else possibly recommend specific wood oils that work well with Hemnes and remain breathable? Are there any ingredients I should pay attention to?
I just want to make sure the furniture doesn’t end up “trapped” or develop cracks due to an unsuitable finish.

I’ve had really good experiences with linseed oil-based wood oils, for example from Osmo or similar brands. They are breathable, provide good protection, and don’t have a strong odor. It’s important to apply them thinly and evenly, and possibly reapply after the first drying.
Important: Avoid solvent-based oils; natural oils with nourishing properties are better. This way, the wood stays breathable and naturally beautiful.
It’s really enjoyable to see how the wood truly comes to life this way. Good luck! 🙂
