Hello everyone,

I am currently planning the furnishing of my bedroom with a sloped ceiling and want to use the Ikea PAX wardrobe for this. I’m wondering how to best install the PAX under a sloped ceiling without losing too much storage space while maintaining both stability and appearance.

The room has a relatively steep slope with an angle of about 40 degrees, and the height varies from approximately 220 cm (87 inches) to 110 cm (43 inches). My goal is to adapt the PAX so that it fits exactly into the slope without requiring major modifications to the construction afterward.

Does anyone have experience adapting PAX wardrobes to sloped ceilings? How do you handle the top panel and side walls? Is it necessary to resort to custom-made parts, or are DIY adjustments sufficient? What materials are suitable for any cutting or trimming, and how do you secure the wardrobe against slipping on inclined surfaces?

I would be very grateful for helpful tips, design ideas, or planning advice!

Hey Minlen, this is a really exciting project! I built a PAX closet under a sloped ceiling myself, and I can tell you: it works! 😊

I slightly modified the side panels by cutting them at an angle on top with a saw, so they fit exactly against the slope. For the top panel, I bought an extra board and then cut it to size—using a jigsaw works best for a clean finish!

It’s important to secure the wardrobe firmly to the wall to prevent it from tipping over. I used special brackets screwed into the back panel and anchored to the wall with wall plugs. Also, I recommend adjusting the doors so they don’t rub against the sloped ceiling.

Don’t get discouraged! With some patience and the right tools, it will turn out great. If you like, I can share some detailed tips on cutting! 😊👍

Hello Minlen,

I would like to structure my response to make things clearer:

- First, you should measure the space very precisely. Especially the slope needs to be determined accurately, ideally using a protractor or a bevel gauge to capture the exact angle.

- With the Ikea PAX system, it is possible to shorten or adjust individual elements in height. You can cut the side panels at the top edge with a fine handsaw or jigsaw at an angle so that they align flush with the roof slope. You should mark the cut line on the inside to maintain the appearance.

- The top panel can also be cut to size. MDF or chipboard with the same thickness, often 18 mm (0.7 inches), is recommended. This material can be easily adjusted and painted to visually match the PAX unit.

- For secure mounting, I recommend attaching the wardrobe to the roof beams using brackets if accessible. Otherwise, wall plugs and appropriate screws are sufficient, which is especially important to prevent the unit from tipping over.

- The doors may also need adjustment, for example, if the slope is steep, to avoid rubbing. They can be trimmed all around or fitted with special hinges.

- If no suitable angle or attachment is possible, it is advisable to add a matching side panel or custom cladding to cover the slope.

I hope this helps! If you have any questions about individual steps, I’m happy to assist.

Accurate planning is essential here.

- From my experience, it is helpful to first create a cardboard template that replicates the exact measurements and angle of the slope. This way, you can test at home how the wardrobe fits best.

- When installing, the PAX usually cannot be positioned at full height against the slope because the height varies. A practical solution is to place the tallest unit in the highest corner and then add smaller modules or open shelves next to it that are adapted to the sloped surface.

- For cutting, I recommend working as precisely as possible with sharp tools to avoid rough edges.

- Regarding stability: screws and anchors should always be fixed carefully into load-bearing walls, which are often hidden behind the cladding of the sloped ceiling. It may be advisable to remove some wall paneling to locate the beams or studs behind.

- As an alternative to the direct PAX unit, you can also build a custom-fit additional shelf from wood that specifically covers the slope and creates a smooth transition.

The main challenge is less the wardrobe itself and more its proper integration into the room. I hope these tips provide you with some practical starting points.
